I am in the process of doing Weld Draglite wheels to run dog dish on my 71 GS .... thanks to Hugger for the suggestion and Steve Reynolds for fabricating the adapters. I got the wheels powder coated gloss black and tires mounted. 15x6 front with Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R radials, 26x8x15 15x8 rear with Mickey Thompson ET/SS, 295x55x15 Adapters are on hand and dog dish are enroute. I tried several searches and could not find all the answers I was looking for. Here's what I am "thinking" but open to suggestions one way or the other. I need longer and bigger rear wheel studs. Is the 1/2-20 and 3" length what I need to do this the right way? I need open style lug shanks, what are the best to use with these wheels? Fronts - Can I use the stock studs? or should they be upgraded to 1/2-20 and if so any suggestions on length. I am not planning to swap back and forth to my ralley wheels. The car sees mostly street use with occasional track use. Safety is a priority and I don't want to cut corners. Thanks in advance, Pete
Thanks for the reply. Yes, factory studs are 7/16. I don’t really understand how all this works, and I’m trying to figure it out. Like the old saying goes, you don’t know what you don’t know. If the more experienced people here, like yourself feel that 7/16 would work on my application, I’m good to go with that. I just don’t know. Basically, what I’m looking for is what is the recipe to mount my tires and wheels without cutting corners. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I ran the Draglites on my Nova and a Camaro in the past. I just bought the 7/16-20 open end lug nuts with the correct length shank and wheel washers, for the stock studs, and they were fine. Don't remember what brand they were. I got them from the local speed shop many years ago.
I ran 7/16 stud into the very low 21s, went with 1/2 on my new moser axles, but front were stk till I did my business brake upgrade
I think the stud has to protrude from the nut to pass tech.. stock studs would barely get into the meat of the shank lug nut.
They only needed to extend through on the rear......but that might have changed by now, my fronts were closed capped and passed tech at every track I ever too, Norwalk, indy, Muncie, edgewater, clay city, beach bend, Milan, 42 just to name a few
Right on. I was talking about the rears. I run stock rims and tires on the front. I only have the pro stars for the rear because they came with some street tires i bought a couple years ago. I figured i might as well use them with the slicks.
ok, so I'll stick with the 7/16-20 and get longer studs. The front are too short when using the dog dish adapter plate so looks like I'll be replacing them all the way around.
They need to extend past the hex portion of the nut at least the diameter of the stud ..to run draglights /prostars etc .you will need to get longer studs all around ..mcgaurd nuts or equivalent they have a removable cap for tech inspection
I finished this over the weekend. Went with 7/16-20 2 7/8" moroso studs for the front and the rear. I was able to get them installed without having to slide axles out or take off the front rotors. The adapters from Steve Reynolds and the dog dish I acquired look great.
exactly. I run the capped version. The black plastic caps unscrew for tech inspection. I run the same on the front just to be cool And on the Reynolds car, protruding all the way. Old school to pass tech in the day. And again on all four just to be cool
