There are major differences between the 32485 & 29855. I just got a mirror assembly date coded 72 today. Had the 29854 upper housing and the 32485 lower and compared them to the 29855 lower I had.
In the images gold = 32485.

Like I said in my earlier post, the angle of the housing where it attaches to the door skin is different.

GM often did this with the mirrors, or like they did with the Olds/Buick mirrors, they used a different gasket to take up the difference between the door skin angles.

They did the same thing with the exterior door handles, they altered the angle of the housing where it contacts the door skin.

Position of mirrors can be different as well. 70 doors had mirror holes on drivers door further forward. A 70 GSX actually used the 71 door that had mirror mounting hole further back. Learned this from Rich Johns. Passenger side is less important. Drill to match.

Hi, I am restoring a 1970 GS 455, I removed the mirror glass assemblies for painting upper and lower housing, but metal cables detached from black plastic backing.
I tried to find a new replacemente on the web, but never found it. I read on this thread that even if many sports mirrors of those years are similar they are not correct for 70-72 Buick...I wonder if I can take a mirror assembly from one of those "similar sports mirrors" and install it in a '70 GS 455 sport mirror housing...? Any other suggestion is well accepted !

First of all you said 70 GS455. I don’t think sport mirrors were stock so who knows what mirrors on on your car unless you know they came from a Buick or olds. Your going to have to be carful here there were changes to these through out the years in the mounting. You will need to record the part number of the plastic housing that has the glass attached to it. Measure the length of the remote cable and try to find a match. Your best bet is to find a sport mirror with a mirror date code pre-73. Post some pictures of the mirror parts that will help IDing. I may have what you need.

Fusick Olds might be someone to try. I wonder if anyone can make those gaskets with a 3D printer?

I made the mistake of buying an assembly manual from the Parts Pl., Inc when I got it I opened it up it was absolutely useless the printing was missing So badly it rendered useless I mean the whole damn manual. When I called them up and told them it’s a piece of crap and useless they told me what do you want it’s a copy of a copy

    Thanks I will check.
In your opinion Housing, mirror assembly etc. are not from 70-72 Buick ? Reading Duane Heckman article it seems they are not...

The base is definitely not f0r an A-body. Looks like some one modified it to fit. Easy giveaway is the mounting studs not used in our cars. Mirror glass date code makes sense = 4/1971. I believe corvettes used the stud style mirrors back then possible others but definitely not A-body, Camero/Firebird, nova etc. I have not seen that part number on the back of the glass housing befor either. Can you post pics of the inside of the housing and the piece that the mirror plate mints to the housing?

As much as I hate to agree with TTP, they are correct about the 1970 Assembly Manuals.
I have held one of the very few originals in my hands, and the printing on the pages is blurred. Therefore any copy made from them is also blurred, but then again some copies are better then others.

Now if you bought a 1971 or 1972 manual, they are so clean it's amazing, but that doesn't help the 70 guys. (I have often had to use the other year manuals to figure out part numbers from the 70 book.)

One other thing about the Sport Mirrors, 1972 Chevelle's came with a sport mirror for the driver side only. They used a different base housing and gasket. If you find one of these mirrors you can only use the mirror assembly and the upper housing that surrounds the mirror. The other parts will not work.

Yeah that one is going to be tough to find. There were many different styles of mirror glass assembly mounting through out the years. That’s an odd one there. At least you have some part numbers to work with. You could run through ebay and find a similar looking assembly and ask the seller for the part numbers. Or ditch those that you have fill in the existing holes on the doors and re-drill for the correct versions.

Apparently the 324 base is a 71-75+ X-body only mirror. It looks pretty good on my GS with no mounting gasket right? 35159D17-BEA6-4818-A457-5331B2815BCB.jpeg 2613DF83-C9C5-432A-82D3-FFDDDE992AFA.jpeg ABE6108E-F00D-4D7C-AD1C-893114F03FAB.jpeg base is an X-body only mirror. Problem is that these bases are slightly longer than than the 298 bases and the original gasket, for a Nova, is convex on the bottom. Also, the bracket mounting holes are closer together. Need to use the X-body specific bracket.

so I reversed engineered the Nova gasket, removed the conveyed area and a buddy of mine is 3D printing a flat set. We’ll see.

Can go to a hobby shop and get some sheet plastic and cut out a gasket from a cardboard template using some heavy duty shears or razor knife
