Walker Dynomax Super Turbos - Still the Go-To?

For many years the Dynomax was the muffler that tested best for flow and quietness. Is that still the case? The 14 inch stainless MagnaFlows on my GS with the new Stroker motor are way louder than with my mild 455 and drone really bad.

So, which 20 inch case fits our 70-72 A bodies best? 17748 side center or 17749 side side. I can’t recall which I’ve used in the past.

The OE exhaust is side/side with the inlet oriented toward the driveshaft. I have used both side and center outlet on the rear.

I have used many of those, but also had very good luck with the Hooker Areochamber mufflers. Did a performance Frame off on a GSX 23 years ago and used those mufflers.. Took it to Norwalk Buick raceday on the way to deliver it to it's owner in Orlando.. bolted on a set of 26x10 slicks and put the air cleaner in the trunk, and that car ran 12.o's Very similar HP/Torque to your motor. but we did it the hard way, with a bigger hyd flat tappet cam, ported iron heads, ported performer intake and headers and a 1000 comp series Thermoquad. This build pre-dated the TA alum STG 1 Alum heads by about 5 years.

I mention this because with a 3.5" to 3" X pipe, these Areochambers, and 3" TA Tailpipes, I had several folks come up to me in the pits that day, and ask me what exhaust it had on it.. several proclaimed it was the best sounding GS they ever saw.

They are a short case, should fit right in with your system and are not the thrashy sound that the flowmasters have. Deep mellow tone until your really on it.

Gord Martin owns that car today, you could ask him about them.. but I would use them again. I believe that system is still on the car.

I like the aerochambers also,..very unique and muscle car sound ,...magnaflow and any straight thru muffler have never sounded good to me

Thanks, Jim. I'd forgotten about the Aerochambers. Had them on my '87 Turbo T which was a mid 11s car. They were nice and quiet and didn't drone. I'll give them consideration.

By the way, I remember that GSX. He lived just around the corner from me in East Orlando.

Yup, White one.. trying to come up with the owners name.. Chris.. ya that's it.. Built that car and painted it, in my 24x24 two car garage.. my first frame off.. and the first major project for the then newly formed TSP.. I had just quit my tech job at the Honda dealer.. did that car myself in just about a year.. Interior was completely OE, if I recall correctly. Very nice condition, near perfect. That was the first one I had the plastic chrome done on.. and detail painted it myself.. lots of firsts for me on that car.. Pre-dated this website by at least 3 years.

Legit GSX, but OE drivetrain long gone.. California car, and to this day, it still has the cleanest, rust and dent free sheetmetal I have ever seen on a Buick A body.. there are several panels on that car that didn't require a spot of any kind of filler. Just prime, block and shoot..

I did not realize how rare that was at the time..

When I had my 2 1/2" system, I used the Walker 17749's. They were nice and quiet at idle/cruise, but got loud when you got on it. No drone. When I went to my 3" X pipe system, I used the Magnaflow 14264 mufflers. I had listened to a few cars with them at my Friday Cruise meet and liked them. Same characteristics as the Walker mufflers.

I still have one car with Dynomax Super Turbos and a 3” Torque Tech system. Those are offset in/offset out. It all depends on the system and how the pipes are bent. Some of the newer systems are made for a straight, some are made for an offset/straight. I still like the Super Turbos, when I can use it. I’ve got a few with Dynomax race bullets, but I wouldn’t exactly call that a muffler.

I prefer Walker welded ULTRAFLOs....low restriction, no drone.

I have the bullets on my car. I think they are 9" long.. I'm not sure how these even qualify as mufflers.

My dilemma is I have the stainless MagnaFlow 2 1/2 on the car now and the muffs are offset/straight but they're 14 inch muffs. The Walkers are 20 inch so I cant decide if I should order the offset/straight or change to the offset/offset because of the increased length I think I'll let my exhaust guy help me make the decision when the car is up in the air getting my current system tweaked to get it to sit closer to the floorboards.

I used the Walker 17749's on my car. Liked them a lot.

I have Dynomax 17749's on both cars and they are very quiet. Even much quieter than most any modern "performance car". I do like the tone, not raspy or tinny. I know a lot of folks like that sound, but it has always grated on my nerves.

Coming from the days of "Oprah Tickets" for DWY (Driving While Young), I figured I would be less likely to draw attention to myself with quieter exhaust.

But I get the urge and my hacksaw hand gets all twitchy once in a while.

My 65. 71 and 73 all have the 17748, 20" offset in/center out and I like them a lot. They support mid 12's no prob and have a great tone.

I just put the Dynomax 17734 14" Super Turbo Mufflers on my car, but haven't started or driven it yet. They're offset/offset to work with the Pypes system that came with the car.

I have a brand new set of the 17733 14" Super Turbo mufflers, which should also be 14" casings. They are offset/center and 2.5". I bought them for the Buick back in January, assuming it needed that inlet/outlet configuration. I think I waited to long and can't return them.

I have 17748s on mine; my pipes are TA mandrel bent and they said to use the ‘48s. No drone and fairly quiet.

I installed mine in 1995. Have loved them ever since. Like artillery in the garage on a cold light-off; mellow at cruise (but the guy in the other lane knows you're there); angry at WOT.

If the tailpipes are designed for a certain muffler outlet position, and you install a muffler with a different one,you might have to slice the tail at the top of the arch, rotate, weld. Been there done that. Actually,it was a Magna-Flow kit and I wanted a different muffler, which wasn’t available in the same configuration as the Magna-Flow muffler.

That's my dilemma. I have the 2 12" MagnaFlow with the side/Center 14" stainless mufflers. I just can't figure out whether I can remove the 14" muffs and replace with the Walker 20 in. muffs. I want this 20 inch case because tests showed they flowed and sounded better than the 14". Here's what I have now.

Ray, I would stay with the offset inlet/center out. That way your tail pipes would stay where they are. You would need to shorten the mid pipes maybe a slight bend for the correct angle for the new mufflers. Should be an easy upgrade.
