Wow! The Dead End Kids. I always thought they only had the white 1971 car. That Richard Chamberlain now owns. Richard bought it from the brothers in just resent years...unrestored, just how it left the drag strip. amazing to see.
It looks like a back in the day magazine for Buick mechanics. There's some on ebay if you want a peak. This one belonged to a friend. I did not get a picture of the cover, sorry.
The White Dead End Kids car now resides in Michigan with the new owner based in SE MI. It wiggled its way into my garage for some TLC. Resealing the engine & transmission and suspension bushings along with a few other items to make it road worthy once again. Maybe even a trip or 2 down the track. We will see.
This is a pretty interesting and cool car. Actually is pretty darn stock. No porting, small valve heads, iron intake, q-jet, stock bore, stock pistons, stock rockers, stock pushrods, standard bearings on the crank, stock suspension bushings, even has the stock nylon cam gear on the .400 - .460 lift cam which fits the 1971 NHRA specs for the small valve 455. The heads & block have been decked to put the CR at 10.4. Has Mickey Thompson Super Scavengers however at one time it had the Hooker Super Comp 2 piece headers as evidenced by the cutouts on the inner fenders. It does have the 4.78 gears with a very small convertor on the front of what appears to be a 66 T-400 with a stock valve body. The engine & transmission have fresh gaskets and seals along with new suspension bushings to replace the hard as a rock & worn out originals. Should be once again road & track worthy very soon. I will take a few pics when finished.
Please do. Can't wait! I forget. but when seeing the car at Flint. What color was it from the factory? (saw it was repainted in the white)
I finished my part of the project. The car is back together and running. It is very responsive and should run quite well. We hope. It was originally Bamboo Cream. The chassis has 40,000+ miles on it and at one time had a trailer hitch on it. It is a 1970 GS 455 that had the bumpers & grille changed to be able to run it in NHRA 's GS/A as a 71. Now to make plans for some track time.
Super cool stuff!! So the white car currently in Dave’s hands—it’s not the same car as the dark color ‘70 from the ‘Buick Best’, right? Where’s that car now? Patrick
I recently met a nice gentleman named Jim Carlson that was selling some Buick parts. We struck up a conversation and we got on the topic of racing and he sent me some photos of a couple of the Buicks he raced. Jim said he ran the wagon in OS/A. He sold it years ago but indicated that he thinks it's still likely being raced today with a new owner. This white car is a real '70 GSX with about 30k miles. Similar to the car that Dave Hemker posted above, this '70 model was dressed with some '71 model parts so it could run in a GS/A. Jim indicated that the car was sold a number of years ago and no longer a race car.
Came across some I hadn't seen before. Thats Larry Tores of T&D Machine Products on the right in the 86 pic. Nice one of "The Scalper" before the Buick's.
Saw this picture, and it reminded me of this this thread. What a shame all of the early pictures were lost.
