True. I remember looking at a restored '60 Vette before I bought my '61 that had been a Waterford Hills road course racer.

Inspecting it revealed all four corners had been knocked off over it's career.

:blast: :blast: :blast: :blast: :Dou: :Dou: :Dou:      You can thank the flagger for 90% and 10% to the front row. The flagger threw the green very late. Of course I blame the front row because technically they jumped the green, checked up, and the accordian effect caused the crash. I raced in Group 6 for several races the last couple of years. What a joke. I am dissapointed with their favoritism and rules lacking for such an organized and huge series. I mean SVRA for the most part. Go measure the wheelbase and CI on that Donohue ;) . We had a 383 stroker in our 65 Vette and got walked. I know for a fact two of the top 10 motors that are supposed to be 427's and one is a 540 Cube stroker. That car is for sale :) My friend and coworker Grant Maiman was driving Comers car. Total victim. Grant is a Red Bull winner and is very qualified and got spanked by the cheater cars. I want to build a car for Brick next year. I want to build a 66 Dart Trans Am car, 782 Hemi with a blower and Nitrous and then let them try to kick me out...... It's rediculous racing now. Somebody will be hurt or killed if they keep letting the cars get faster and faster with minimal rollcages and hoops. Cup cars run only a tick faster at the Glen MPH wise and they are built... OK, I vented...

yes, i concur wholeheartedly. there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for a major series to be so unprofessional that they can't even be bothered to check the stroke or pull the heads and check the bore / valve sizes. any 'real' racing series either has a mandatory full tear down for the winner or a challenge procedure whereby the winner can be forced to tear down.

that's why i take Engelke's comments with a grain of salt. racers (Real Racers mind you, men who are there to WIN not just parade or show for the checker) are risk takers and aggressive by nature. if you don't make a rule ... they will go there. if you fail to enforce the rules ... they will go there. they HAVE too or they won't be able to compete with those who will.

you can't expect any better flagging out of them then they administer the rest of rules.

Dude, no offense, but you do not have a clue. I know almost all of the history of the top cars...CLONES..... I know. How many races have you done???

  7. its not how many races i have done but i grew up and lived around this track all my life
even help on the track for years
and yes as a kid we raced on the track
Mr Matsdorf owned it back then and we had races every weekend in the summer that there where not races
i hang out with the drivers just like everyone else
and there are a few of them i know personally and see often
Jim Shnettler is one who makes sure his car is all original
even bought an old 60 race vette years back to make sure he can race here with it
used to pit for Randy Sippel when pitting wasn't a full time thing but fun running down the road as fast as you could after work on fridays just to get to the race and hurrying back all night to get to work monday morning
DUDE is the only insult heard
keep that for the younger crowd
Greg or Mr Hildebrand is better
    i do prefure Greg though

    next time your up

What's wrong with old guys using the phrase/title of DUDE??

Things sure have changed in the SVRA MISTERHildebrand. Since you hanging out there as a kid. Since I used to be a member of the SVRA myself waaaaaaay back when. Back then, it was mainly old Alfas, Deutsch-Bonnets, Healeys, and the occasional Ferrari. The old Trans-Am cars were just coming onto the circuit. As in any form of racing, the....ahem...technology ( read that as cheating ) takes over the class. This starting line wreck is a prime example of what can go wrong with too much technology and too much ego. Mopar92's car owner has gotten out of the sport because of those very reasons. Too much cheating, and too much ego.
"Mopar92" is a very good buddy of mine who I sent this link to. Why, you ask?? Because he has raced in this event driving a GranSport Corvette (the '65 with a 383 stroker that he refers to) . Because he has been intimately involved with this class/group for a number of years. Because he is a professional driver/racer, not just in the SVRA. Because he is the most qualified person I could think of to comment on this senseless track accident. As opposed to most everyone else on here that have no clue/idea/ or experience as to what really transpired to cause this. Dude, what have you done ,MISTER Hildebrand, that rivals/equals that with this event?? Other than living 4 miles from the track??
As for the "authentic" cars involved?? Let's just say most racers there spell authentic: C-L-O-N-E. About the only thing authentic on most of the cars are only the VIN plates.

You can call me "dude" or you can call me "sir", just don't call me late for dinner...... :Brow:

I apologize. I won't call you dude anymore unless I see you in a Hawaii shirt. That was somewhat disrespectful. I am seriously glad nobody was hurt more than a stretched neck, broken arm, and shattered pride. As for the correct, the big crash revealed a huge amount of grass littering BONDO and fiberglass decklids on Camaros that run top 10 :) I sure love the carbon fiber leaf springs, and man, those adjustable KONI shocks really look good once they are painted with rattle can black. Need pics? :Brow: ?

all cars are real and documented as such

the VIN plate and paperwork are usually worth as much as anything else on these cars ... because they can be put on practically any other car of the proper year/model. this isn't actually that shocking for a former race car. active race cars get torn up and repaired all the time. where do you draw the line for what cannot be replaced? the engine? the sheet metal? how much of the frame are you going to try to make them keep in order to call it original? :Do No:

hardly any serious 'race car' sees an entire season w/o having to replace something of significance ... does that mean that there are no 'originals' that you can go out and buy?

i don't really have a huge problem with the VIN trading considering that a lot of these cars weren't 'original' any more by the end of the first year they were raced.

as to the 'real' ... sigh.

    ********

you see the second race on this page? the one that Robert Thornton took the checker in with a mustang?

i know that car. my father helped build that car (primarily advice, but some assembly as well as setup advice at the track). i helped wrench it (very basic stuff, but still true) at daytona.

that engine was stroked. i know this for a fact. my father saw the parts. bob talked about it openly (although, not in front of the SCCA tech guys, obviously). all of the other top runners were doing the equivalent. none of them were ever 'caught'. there is no rule enforcement to speak of by the SCCA.

V- bob (we called him this because he used to live in V-, FL) is running ****** now-a-days and he doesn't own the 'stang anymore so it's a moot point. the last i knew he sold the VIN/paperwork seperate from the car/components. the same way he got them. :spank:

I looked this thread up to feel a little better about the bent valve.....

then I found the forensic lab work that was done to try to find the cause of the accident:
