I have a buyer for my '66 'Cat and he wants to come in the spring and drive it home with a small UHAUL trailer attached loaded with all the spare parts I've collected. There is no aftermarket hitch that I know of and any universal hitch I've found thus far doesn't seem to do the trick. The frame rails are 51" outside to outside at the back, there's about a 3" dip in the gas tank below the rails, and the frame is boxed about 24" behind the lower lip of the bumper ("C" channel in front of that).

I know some of you other big car guys have hitches. What did you do or what did you use to get a hitch to work? I can get some fab work done if I can at least get close, if necessary.

    Ken,

I have been able to buy very unusual trailer hitches for unusual applications through Uhaul directly. They sell a very wide variety of hitches and may be able to hook you up - so to speak  Regards,

Ken, I would be a little cautious about trying to fab something up for the guy. God forbid something happens on the guys ride home, you might be considered liable. May not be worth the risk.

I would suggest to the guy to just bring a pickup truck and have a friend follow him home with the truck. That way in case the car breaks for whatever reason, they have another vehicle to get help or parts.

Thanks for the replies, Arland and Jason. Good point on the liability issue. Also, I didn't realize UHAUL had wider selections than what was commercially available through Reese or Drawtite. Possibly they do some fab of their own (which would then be their liability) I'll check them out. The buyer is willing to pay for the hitch, so I'll get a price. And Jason, it's a 24 hr drive one way from where he lives to my house, so the idea is for him to fly in and then drive back with the trailer. I'll try UHAUL.

    Thanks!

    Hey Jason-

Thanks for the heads-up, but UHAUL came through for me. I got a class II hitch custom made for the 'Cat for $139.00. I thought that was a great deal! Now I'm just waiting for it to warm up above the 30's so I can install it!

    Ken,

Glad to hear the Uhaul assortment worked out for you. They have proven equipment at a good price - you just have to get past the Uhaul stigma:)
