I recently sold my truck, which was a mistake, and am looking for a tow vehicle later this spring when the car is done. I really don't want another truck for the very limited times that I would use it as a truck. I have been thinking along the lines of a mid 90's Roadmaster wagon or a Chev wagon of the same vintage. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, other than I screwed up by trading the truck for a car?

It depends on how much weight you plan on towing, including all your passengers and stuff in the wagon. A car is not a truck, even a 1/2 ton truck, as the brakes, axle, transmission, cooling, etc is way undersized for any heavy duty towing duties.

So, what ya thinkin' about hooking up?

Brad, I have my '74 Stage 1 and I'll borrow a friend's open trailer, maybe 1,000 pounds or so, and that's about it. I would say 5,000#-5,500# total.

You should be OK towing that weight, but I would really look for a RM with the towing package. It comes with much heavier duty wheels, sway bars, brakes, cooling, etc.

Ever thought about a Rainer with the V8? The early ones (2004) are priced in the mid teens to about $20,000 now. The V8's are rated to tow 6500 lbs. I have an '04 myself and it really is a nice vehicle.

I won't be towing that often, but when I do, I want to at least feel somewhat safe. The car or truck will usually be found sitting in the Cat parking lot, so fuel economy will play a small part of the call I make. Some days the more I think about it, the more confused I get.
