Ya, it is a comp grind Gary.. it's one of those "sweet spot" combos of cam and compression, I was expecting high 500's out of the build, but it took me by surprise.. Obviously the customer and I were very pleased.. nice to run pump gas in your 630 HP bracket motor.. the only thing cheaper is E-85.. Really surprising with 315cfm cylinder heads. Efficient motor, VE's up past 100 for most of the pull, and the flattest torque curve I can recall seeing.. I was bummed that the comp cams Pro Magnum lifters did not work out tho.. which is why we had to go to solids.. and I tell ya, if you do a "tight" zero lash cold,You only end up with about .005 or so hot.. this thing was dead quiet on the dyno, thru the TA cast covers. It was so quiet I took a valve cover off it when it was hot just to see what the lash was. In the past, I had witnessed solid lifter cam lash grow 10-12 thousandths from cold to hot. This is what I expected. My conclusion on this was that my "tight zero" sucked up some of the lash that developed. I noticed the pro magnum lifters looked different when I took them out of the box.. when we did the first session, it would not rev past 5800 without losing the valvetrain.. pulled a cover, and you could watch the lifters collapse just turning it over.. I actually shot some video of it. Those lifters were a joke.. Cross them off the parts list.. solids for sure next time someone taps me for one of these. Bruce.. not sure on the TH 350C.. I would image it could be beefed to handle it.. Heck, the Stock eliminator guys are running Turbo 200's these days.. I think you should just freshen the valve springs up, it should be fine to 6400.. even with stock rods.. they are "work hardened" by now. Besides, I never have broken a stock rod on the big end.. always just off the starting line, where the motor is under the highest load. JW
Bummer on the PRO Magnums(edge orifice) ...I have them on my Stage 2 in BQUICK with 608B TA cam and they have been in there since 2003 and still rev to 6500 and are quiet. I wonder what they changed?
I thoroughly clean all new hyd lifters anymore. Should have seen the bottom of the tray when I was done. No wonder people have problems, the clearances are tight.
Good luck getting the hydraulic roller’s I was told by TA they do not have them in stock and they have no idea when they’re getting more
Again. Still, I ordered a roller sbc cam through Scott Brown, what used to take 3 weeks took 9 weeks. And I'm still waiting on a call back about a few others I need cams cut for.......but cores for almost all motors are gone
Some very interesting stuff here, been away from the board for a while. I run a 464 with stock rods and crank. The engine is close to 1100 passed with 90% 1/4 mile. I run index mostly 10.25-10.50. I run a 3.90 gear and 10.50Wx31 MT tires. When running all out it crosses at 6350 at 133. That's running 9.90s. I'm not running on E85 and think it picked up some. Engine never been on a Dyno. Ran same springs since 2007. It will turn 6500 or more but NEVER do that. Shift at 6k. Has a solid lifter Scott Brown cam.
I say yes Check with mike p. (No lift on here) He has a 350c in his 76 special and it really moves.... Scott
Very interesting about the Pro Magnum problems those were the ones I would go to when changing cams they always worked good and engine is quiet on startup.
Greg or Mike...how well did the 350C holdup...any issues. I know a 350 with the right parts can holdup but wondering about the lockup converter....don't want a 100 run setup.....
They sell lock up converters meant to be locked at WOT and nitrous use. Of course you have to pay for that. https://converter.com/vigilante/
You don’t necessarily need a lockup converter, just the right converter. It’s something a lot of us have played around with in our past. I had one similar to yours before. It 60ft awesome, but you couldn’t get it to the other end,and it didn’t like being driven around. Had a custom converter made for the car. Problem solved.
Bruce, give Greg a call at www.quadrajetparts.com. He should be able to tell you what you need to know. If they can design a lock up converter for the cars discussed in the article below, I'm pretty sure they have something for us. https://www.dragzine.com/tech-stori...s-101-the-resurgence-in-heads-up-drag-racing/
I like the lockup feature for sure it’s very helpful. Just keep in mind that it costs about $800 for a good triple disk Lockup converter to handle 600 HP. I’ve done a few lockup 4L80E converters from Hughes and they were amazing, about $1000 but rated for 800 plus Hp. I’m sure a normal Th-350 could be modified for lockup function but again it’s another cost.
