To freshen up or not to freshen up my TH400, that is the question...

I have a Th400 in my 68' Skylark that I installed about 23 years ago with only about 1500-2000 miles on it. The car has been sitting a long time. I did not build the transmission, but it's supposed to be a street/strip-heavy duty build with improved internals. I've not had it out of the car since installed and now that I'm getting ready to finally do my 455 swap into the car while I have the Buick 350 out, I wondered if I should go ahead and disassemble it, do an inspection and at minimum replace all the internal seals and gaskets. I was going to just replace the front and rear seals and let it go at that but since I'm going to have it out anyway I thought about going through the whole thing. I've never been inside a TH400 but feel I can handle it since I've rebuilt about a dozen TH350's for myself and others, not to mention a couple of Ford AOD's and one Ford A4LD overdrive transmission.
When I drove my Skylark last time in 2005 it did have an issue of starting in 2nd gear from a stop. If I manually put it in 1st then Drive it would upshift fine. But always when coming to a stop it would start off in 2nd gear. It did not do this when I first put the transmission in so an inspection probably would be a good idea. I suspect it has a governor issue but not sure. I just would like some input and advice as what I should do.

    Thanks,
    Jim

If you've done a TH350, the TH400 should be a piece of cake. Since you mention an issue the odds even more tilted toward going through it. My 2 cents is - do it!

Ok. Appreciate the input! I do think I'll go ahead and disassemble the transmission and check it out. I'll get a new converter too to match my new engine.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Throw in a $50 seal kit now, avoid those failures for a couple more decades.
400 Might be the easiest 3 speed auto to rebuild, a few special tools really help.

I haven't started on the transmission yet. It's been so hot here in the Louisville area I think I'm going to put it off until September. I'm definitely going to go thru it though when I do get it pulled out of the car.
