I’ve often wondered which was designed first-the ‘69 GS hood or the ‘70, since the scoop part of the air cleaner is the same. (I know logic says ‘69, but that doesn’t mean it’s so. They could have drawn up the ‘70 and then said ‘hey, if we put this on the current car, we could add a bulge and scoops to it, too...) Patrick
No air is going in there anyway,..even if it was lined up perfect,...the GS hoods were purely cosmetic sales tactics,... The GS needed something besides some emblems to set it apart from the Skylark same as the GTO hood,. Chevelle cowl induction..Olds etc

It is. Air hitting the windshield tends to stack up I would imagine. https://itstillruns.com/pros-cowl-induction-race-hood-5571485.html I think Bruce is referring to the stock scoops which sit flat on the hood. Air moving over the flat hood at speed would have less pressure. That in itself would tend to draw air out of the openings. But the engine would be trying to suck air in. I wouldn't call that drawing a vacuum though.
The only "Ram Air" that works is a turbo or supercharger. Buick was right by calling it "cool" or "cold" air induction
Thanks Larry, you always come through! I see the screen below the windshield is blocked also with flat plate. I will read up on his thread but has Craig seen improvement over a full 1/4 mile? I'm guessing that the cowl scoop would only pick up positive air at more than 50 mph? The 68 GS had that super rare option so I can't see it being a gimick look cool thing like the 69 to 72.
I don't think you need to be going 50 MPH to reap the benefits. I also don't think you need to block off the cowl. Another benefit is being able to use a spacer.
Buick tested the stock scoops on a dyno (sitting still) but in actual usage with a car at speed the air goes over the openings that aren't high enough and it produces no ram air effect and actually tries to suck air out. That is why I said vacuum. Any forward facing scoop needs to be at least 3in above surface for it to catch the air. Put your hand on the roof of your car at speed and slowly lift it and you will see what I mean. Cowl induction is totally different as it relies higher pressure area at base of windshield.
I think it was BrianTrick who asked "mltdwn" if he could mold some boxes into the original scoops seeing that the hood now is a bit taller, at least thats what he was thinking of. I can see the 70 -72 W30 scoops and the 69 Hurst Olds working well as they are huge and at a decent spot, even the 68 Hurst Olds scoop below the bumper. Now I had read years ago that 70 GTO ram air picked up a 1/10 or so in the 1/4 mile. The scoops seem to only be a few inches further back than the GS but they are on the side of a bulge down the length of the hood. Maby that bulge helps force the air into them on the GTO?? Could also be only one mans opinion?
