Oops, you already did. You need to advance it.

It’s currently installed at 6* advances. Do you think I should go with 8* advanced and then degree it to see where the ICL is?

The advance key/number is only a means to get you to where you need to be. Don’t worry if is +6, -4, it’s the intake centerline you need to achieve. If it were mine I’d advance it more. I think you can only go one more key way. Who ground this cam?

Gotcha. Yep, one more key way.

I recently bought the car and I know very little about the engine. I’m kind of figuring things out as I go along. I’m not sure who ground the cam. One of the reasons I wanted to degree the cam is to figure out it’s specs.

I also don’t know how much compression the engine has. It has 1972 455 heads. Based on documentation from the previous owner, I believe they were ported. I have no idea if they were decked. Also, I took a look inside the cylinder with a boroscope and could see it has dished pistons. I’m wondering if the cam is too big for the amount of compression the engine has. I plan to do a compression test once the engines back together so I can determine the dynamic compression.

I just advanced the crank gear as far as I can. The cam is now installed on a 110.5* intake centerline. I guess that's as good as it's gonna get.

I'm starting to reassemble everything. Quick question ... blue or red Loctite on the cam gear bolts? Also, are locking washer necessary? The old cam gear bolts had locking washers and no Loctite, and the bolt walked off.

    Thanks!

I use red because that’s what I happen to have. Based on what you posted the other day I could see you could t get to where it should be but give it a shot and see how it runs. I can take a guess on who’s cam you have but won’t post it.
