I am looking at buying a TH400 to rebuild. It is already out if the car and easily examined. It is missing the large riveted tag on the right side of the case that would be marked with the transmission code. One the left pan rail the stamping is as follows : 40H706266. What I would like to know is if there is any way to determine with certainty what the rest of the VIN is and the transmission code is from this? It has a short extension housing and a yoke style output shaft. I suspect it was rebuilt in the past and that is why the tag is gone, the output shaft has been changed and it is painted a bright silver, almost chrome.

I think is is a BA, BB, BS, or some other code B? transmission that has been modified from it's original configuration.

Thanks for the assistance in advance.

Flint built 1970 with a big block, but 700,000 series VINs don’t look like GSs. Maybe Electra, Wildcat, LeSabre?

Does not really matter, it's an excellent candidate for your rebuilt. Should have the stator support snap ring update, and yet still retain the sprag clutch direct drum. My favorite year to build.
