I was wondering if someone can tell me the best way to store iron cylinder heads for a certain length of time? The heads I have are done but, they aren't painted. Though, there is an oily substance on them. I just would like to know the best way to preserve the heads I got so they won't need to be redone from any elements that might be able to get to them. Btw, the heads reside in my bedroom where the air is pretty dry.

    Thanks,
    Rob

The absolute best way to store and keep the heads clean that I've found is to wrap them in shrink wrap. That will keep everything out of them. The next beat would be to wrap them in trash bags. Jim Burek

    Rob,

It might not hurt to paint the outside part of the head before wrapping it in plastic. One less chance for surface rust to form.

If you think it might 'be a while' before you get to use the heads, you might also want to smear some grease on the machined surfaces and valve/combustion chamber area. Also, put a light coating of heavy (thicker) spray lube on the valve tip/retainer/spring assembly. Then seal everything up in a plastic bag - should be fine!:)

Keeping them in your bedroom should minimize any moisture problems.:TU: Don't worry, you're not the only one who 'stores' certain engine parts under the bed (or closet, etc.)!

    Thanks Scott & Jim,
I appreciate the advice for storing my cylinder heads. I guess I have another thing to do this weekend. Scott, I hear ya with storing parts in the bedroom. Next to my cylinder heads is a pair of original GM quarter panels for my Nova I'm restoring:laugh:

    Thanks again,

Rob...either you've got one HUGE bed (or closet) OR you're single!

    Scott,
I'm single. How do you think I can afford all this stuff, LOL! Anyway, it dosen't go to bed with me, it sits in front of my bed. I don't know how much more stuff I can fit in there. I just don't want the stuff to get ruined by moisture and people running into or banging stuff against it. Btw, I drive over-the-road truck so, I'm only home on the weekends.

Rob - Do you do long haul stuff, like down to FL? Which part of the country do you usually drive to?

    Thanks

    Scott,
I usually do mid-west to east coast and down south all the way to Florida. The company I'm with is small and they decided to lease they're fleet to National Carriers out of Liberal, Kansas. So, I'll be running all 48 states now. When I was an Owner/Operator I use to run to Florida every week out of Pennsylvania to pick-up produce.

Rob - You wouldn't be going near Pontiac, MI any time soon would you? I've got a bare sbc block that a guy out that way wants to buy. I've been trying to find decent prices - nothing yet. BTW, I'm out of Binghamton, NY 13901.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,
I can see what my company can do for you. I don't run up to MI too often but, there are probably a few drivers that do. My company just got taken over by a large trucking company so, I'm not sure what direction things are going to go as far as what type of loads we are going to run. Before the take over, whatever could fit in the truck would go but, now I'm not sure. The people I work for are easy to deal with so, on monday I'll ask to see what they can do for you. I know when being an owner/operator that running a load from PA to MI would cost around $600 for a truckload and that was with a '53 trailer. Freight going west towards MI or Chicago is cheap. My company runs by Binghamton alot so, picking it up wouldn't be a problem. If you call a trucking company and tell them it would be picked-up at a truckstop near you and delivered to a truckstop near the guy you are selling the block to then the price should really go down because, Binghamton, NY and Pontiac, MI are right along the interstate and I know there are truckstops in those areas. I know you have a Pilot and TA travelcenter in Binghamton. If you would be interested in picking-up and delivering at a truckstop at a specific time and day then I know I should be able to get you a lower rate on shipping. That's if my new company will allow it. All these big companies don't like messing with small shipments but, I'll do my best for you. Also, I know a few other people that might do it if my company won't.

    Rob

Btw, what prices were you getting from these other companies?

    Rob,

I got prices in the $500 range down to $150-$189 -- but I can't find where I got the $150 price. I got the $189 price from Highway Freight - truckstop to truckstop.

Both the Pilot and TA Truckstop are about 4-5 miles away from me.

I'm still waiting for a 'definite' go ahead from the guy in MI.

The block w/ a pallet would weight 200lbs. If you would see what kind of price you can get me. That's about all the guy is waiting on.

I appreciate your help. We probably should move this to private message or email though.

    Thanks Alot!:TU:
