i have a 1970 skylark convertable and going to put speakers in some where i currently have 2 4 inch up in the dash with aftermarket kick panels with 6 inch 2 ways but that is not enough sound . my idea was to put speakers in the doors so that they would be at the back half of the door and would be at the rear passengers feet when door was closed then some subs behind the upper seat back so they would not be in the trunk and not be heard when the roof is down ... any thoughts what has everyone been doing ????

Don't cut holes in your door panels unless you truly think the front seats won't block or muffle the speakers. You would know better than me. Subs, in my opinion, are not necessary and useless unless you're playing very heavy bassed music such as techno or hip hop, which I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're not. Subs distort music more than enhance it in most cases. Balance and tune your system properly and you won't need it.

I have a radio/CD player in my glovebox, kickpanel speakers, and 4 inch speakers in the rear convertible anchor covers. I can hear the music nice and clear even with the top down.

I think great sound can only be achieved with the use of a subwoofer. I do not listen to hip hop or rap, but rather full music like all us old fogeys.

I guess I'm just not feeling that subs stuck behind insulated seats is really going to be very helpful. That's why i think subs in trunks are useless for good sound quality. Think of your TV entertainment system. your subwoofer is not encompassed and muffled behind an insulated box or stuffed under cushions. Granted, explosions from a movie are a lot different than music as far as the correct sound quality.

I went with Sony Explod 6" speakers with remote tweeters in the kick panels, Sony Explod 6" x 9" in the back panel behind the seats and a self powered 350 watt 8" sub in the trunk. I chose the Sonys' because of the frequency response range and affordability. With a little adjusting of the sub woofer and a little adjusting of the fader towards the rear the set up sounds excellent. :Smarty:

I've been fighting with this for a while, because I don't want any speakers to show unless factory locations so car pretty much sounds original (ie, like crap)...

Currently have 6x9's in factory locations and the dual 2x4 from my website in the dash with sony stereo under drivers seat (controlled via remote)...of course with top down the rear 6x9's are muffled, but again I don't want to cut up my car to put speakers in. I guess a guy could cover another set of kickpanels and save the originals but has anyone come up with something unusual to cover this issue?

The seat support is basically empty, perhaps a person could put speakers in there and duct the sound out (like they do on some stereos)??

Is there a material you can put the speaker under yet still looks more or less stock?

    Just some thoughts...

If I could figure out how to post pictures I'd show how the previous owner of my 72 convert handled the speaker problem.

Art, you can e-mail them to me and I can post them or when you reply to this message just scroll down under reply window and click on "manage attachments", that opens another window where you click on "browse" to the pics location, then click on submit and that's it. Helpful to put them on desktop, makes the "browse" easier. They also need to be under a certain size to post on board.

A hardtop actually keeps sound in the car. My 72 Skylark ragtop has 4 speakers on an original AM Sonomatic radio. The original owner cut out holes and put in flush-mounted 4 1/2" round speakers with a Craig stereo. The sound just got dispersed into the air. The kids in the back claimed it was too loud yet I couldn't hear it. I like the original look of the original radio better. If the top is up the sound is much better. My only problem is AM radio bites and it's hard to tune in stations-lots of distortion. There are people who remanufacture original radios to solid state AM/FM with RCA jacks to accommodate an IPOD.

I was looking at those too, there are a couple on the market. Also looking at speakers up behind dash but angled down to bounce sound off the floor but major pita if you need to work on anything. Perhaps the aftermarket kick panels with speakers in them but again trying to keep stock look. Might have to give up on that idea and just cut some holes, much as I don't want to.

Sony 6 x 9's in the back. I had to bend the sheet metal a little because I wanted the speakers to fire towards the back. There is a 350 watt self powered (Bazooka style) 8" sub in the trunk.

The back cut outs are made for 6 x 9's. I don't think 8's or 10's would fit but I don't think it would be too hard to make them fit either. Just keep in mind that there are moving parts for the top back there. With the sub woofer I have plenty of bottom end and the Sony's are pretty good too. With the top down the rear speakers do get muffled but I just crank the volume a bit and turn the fader to the rear ever so slightly to compensate for the top being down. Me personally? I am very happy with the results and the total cost too, it is not a high dollar set up but it performs very well.

Here is how a 17yr old worked it out in 1983. Got to give him credit, he saved the original seat. It was in the trunk when I bought the car a couple of years ago.\
