Steering Wheel Question

What years steering wheels interchange? Not asking about rally wheels but standard or base wheels. For example, can I put a 1972 wheel on a 1966 steering column? Will it work? Not concerned about appearance either.
    Thanks!

I think 68 and earlier steering columns have a smaller diameter then the 69 newer columns. I believe they made them wider for the column key design.

Of course if you are not worried about that, the later wheels might fit.

I don't know what your end goal is, but most GM will bolt on. I am currently using a steering wheel from a 1998 K2500 on my '65 Skylark. It doesn't look very good, but feels good while driving.

Getting the horn and turn signals to work/cancel will require fabrication.

I am needing to move and maybe drive short distances in my '67 and '68 cars which are getting their original wheels recast. Once the originals are back from the group buy I will not need the temporary wheel. So I just need something cheap to use for a few months. If they fit the splines and shaft they should be good.

Don't know about the earlier cars, but '64-'66 is one diameter, '67-'68 is another slightly larger, and starting with '69 is a third diameter larger still.

I got an OER #9745764 steering wheel (67 Chevelle SS or Nova SS, and it fits, but as xcaddict notes, horn and turn signal/turn signal cancel need to be modified. I had to settle for an SS horn cap. I tell people that they misspelled GS.

Thank you, sbrmd, for the guidance on steering wheel interchange.
