for a power steering 68-72 a body car, what steering box could you use for a quicker ratio than the factory box (looking in the yards for cars that have that better ratio steering box for power steering cars)????
Trans am models have a 2.5 turn box. You will have to swap out the pitman arm. Stock Skylark models used a 4 turn box. You can also use the 85-88 Monte Carlo SS box but that requires some work. See the article on our site if you want to consider that option.
hey george, where exactly do you get this stuff??? Your stock A-body pump fittings will need to be adapted to fit the new metric steering gear. Weatherhead Adapters required: 1 SAE/Metric Adapter M4115 7x6x18 JIC $12.42 2 3-piece nut, CS/ 3/8 FJIC WWW C510 5x6 .42 each = .84 2 3-piece sleeve, CS/ 3/8 JIC WWW C516 5x6 .36 each = .72 1 HYD. JIC/JIC Swivel Adapter GAT 6MJ6FJx90 2.96 each = 2.96 TOTAL: $16.94 85 Chevy truck coupler/rag joint-used $5.00
I sold about 10 of the Monte Carlo SS boxes to fellow Buick nuts. One of them was kind enough to write up the article found on our site. Did you understand all of the material????
yeah i understand it, i think i can do this as long as i have everything infront of me, I'm putting this in my 69 chevelle, i will probably do this conversion in the buick too oh and thanks for the upgrade to the internal voltage regulator alt upgrade worked well on both cars :TU:
some of the monte carlos from like 71-72 had 3.5 turn boxes you will loose turning radius on the trans am and the g -body boxes
I would go with the Jeep Grand Cherokee box. http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref29.html As nekkid said, you will lose some turn radius.

Heres another place that has fast ratio boxes. http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.m...evellecamino&Category_Code=SUSPENSIONSTEERING
The whole loss of steering radius is not worth worrying about. MY box is from a 78 T/A and I noticed no difference. Parking is a non issue, and I can still make a U turn on a two lane road in one shot, with out reversing. The difference is there, but not a problem or even noticeable. Really, save the $$$ and hassle and get a T/a or a Z28 box.
Hi George, which steeringbox do i need for my 72 Skylark. It has a manual steeringbox and its worn out.
I went to NAPA and ordered a Reman 69 SS 396 box and it is identical. Bolted right in with same pitman arm. I'm sure there's others, like I think a Jeep Grand Cherokee had a crossover box as well iirc. For me the quicker ratio box made a huge difference from my stock box.
Truth be told it's lighter. My only complaint. Not enough feedback or r3esistence. But that might have something to do with my pwr steering pump, when I replaced it at the same time, I had to use the threaded inset and seal from my original pump because the hose wouldn't thread into the new pump's receptacle. It was years ago so it's a little foggy but the box definitely was a direct bolt in.
to answer your question you can find quick ratio steeing boxes on the following cars 70-76 monte carlo Gran prix chevelle el camino skylark cutlass GTO (direct bolt in) the ones that are 3 1/4 turns lock to lock are going to be the 12.7.1 ratio mos times the 3.5 to 3.4 turn boxes are the var ratio 14.1 boxes 70-76 camaro and trans am nova omega and x body this box is a 12.7.1 ratio but will limit turning radius they can be 2.6 up to 2.9 turns lock to lock you will need to add a smaller stop to get the required turning radius 77-81 camaro trans am (this is where most of our internal parts come from for upgrades on older boxes) they will need the stops changed and will require hose adaptors and rag joint swap G body quick ratio boxes will not give you full turning radius unless you change the stops they will also require hose adaptors and rag joint swap jeep boxes come with the correct stops the 12.7.1 ratio the bigger T bar for a stiffer feel but require hose adaptors and rag joint swap. let me know if I can help you with one of my boxes. fully rebuilt with the quicker ratio and no need for hose adaptors and it uses the factory rag joint. Hector here is a picture of the smaller stop the bigger stop and both
Hector tnx, mine is a manual box non PS. I will get you the (how many turn of the steeringwheel) info asap. As example i found that LARES one, and it stated that i need there Steeringcoupler with that unit? Why do you need that? A new one is always good. But cant figure out why.
