If you really want to use an OD tranny I suggest using 700r4....much easier to modify for racing and a little stronger too. TH350's are every where, making them a dime a dozen....good way to get power transfer cheaper. Have a mag article somewhere on 700 build-up. I'll try to find and get it posted.
As far as motor, stock mounts for monte w/ sbc will bolt in directly cost $25 for pair at AutoZone. Most any motor can be put in easily as Monte/Cutlass/Grandprix/Regal g-bodies all have same crossover's and came w/ variety of motors. Big blocks are hardest as heater box is tough to clear valve covers and headers have to be modified to fit between frame rails.
    Good Luck!

If the reality of this car will be say 2,000 miles a year and it won't leave town then get a th350/400. Th400 if you are going strong big block on slicks. If you are actually going to put say 6,000+ miles a year on and don't want to trailer it on trips then an OD makes good sense. I don't agree with Chief06 about the 700R4. With the parts that have been developed over the last 5 to 8 years and the spreading of the knowledge of how to build the 2004R it is now I believe post build a stronger tranny. It also has better gearing/gear spaceing for a big block especially 1st & a taller OD.

I have put over 8,000 miles on my 509 ci Cutlass since October. With 2004R, lock up converter, 28" tires, 3.42 gears, a q-jet and a reasonable cam I have gotten 17 mpg on the hwy at 75mph. What is best depends on your goals for the car. But if you can get a 50% increase in mileage going from say 11mpg with a th400 Holley combo to 16.5mpg along with spinning your big block 1/3 less rpms in OD it might be worth it.
