So I was lucky enough to acquire one of the first 4, SP3 intakes. And until now have been too busy to fool with it. Well Norwalk is over and now I have some time! I ran consistent 13.80X in the 1/4 at the event. Once this intake is on, I will go to the local track to do a before and after comparison with no other changes then the intake.

    First step.. It arrived..

Second.. The square bore was not going to work with the qjet so some machining had to be done..

I have a really good relationship with my machine shop who are predominantly Holley guys.. So my bill read as this..

Freshly machined, I was ready to go.

So first step to install was to ruin my oil change by removing the old intake and dumping fresh antifreeze into fresh Brad Penn 10w40. That accomplished I started comparison.

Using my trusty old-piece-of-furniture straight edge I measured the difference.

Yes the new intake is taller.. But I have been running a spacer for some time for the 200-4R adapter and hoped to get rid it. Fearing no metal (even brand new prototype) I started mocking things up.

Here you will see that the TV bracket for my 200-4R interferes with the factory location for the throttle cable bracket

The new SP3 is cool and all... But I really like my overdrive, so it had to go. A few minutes with a sawsal and smoothing, the deed was done.

Next came mocking everything up in the motor..

With a slight hand bend of the fuel line everything bolted up great. The astute observer will notice that the pcv line is disconnected. I had hard lines bent up for my pcv line, and this is the only thing I had to replace (besides all the cutting). The hood closed just fine and I hope to report back soon with some seat-of-the-pants and 1/4 mile slips.

Can't speak for the TCI bracket as this is a TV Made Easy one. But I knew this intake would stay in my possession so I didn't mind some cutting. I'm all for some easy installation, and food for thought for the next guy if the TCI is "shallower".

Justin what are you using for intake manifold bolts looks like there all going to be short side. Do you have any plans to port match an radius under the carb base into the intake runners.

That's what we want to hear, actual comparison tests. Don't forget to include weather conditions when you do the comparison. The air at Norwalk on Friday was pretty bad except the backwind helped a bit. This is my favorite place to visit after a race to see how things really were.

The TCI bracket goes over the rear carb flange so it usually sits a bit higher:

That looks awesome Justin, but if you want it to stay that way, you should paint it. If you like the aluminum color, paint it that way.

Thanks for all the details, I have considered putting one on my motor. It would give the heads an opportunity to breath. I also have a BRF code 200 4r but I do run a quick fuel carb. Some of the information is useful. Thanks again for the post and pictures!

That's one interesting site, I'll more then likely end up with evening air at the track.

I hope to provide some decent before and after info, and hope I have some good results to post.

Thanks Larry! I'll give it a once over before final install. My aluminum painted dual plane has held up really well.

They may have a bit of a sense of humor. But they build damn fine motors!

Glad I can help! Wish I had more to offer then just an install thread, hope to have more info soon.

Cool thread Justin, but can you fill in what you combo is in the lower left hand corner of your signature, of head work(flow numbers if you have them), cam, compression ratio, rear gear, trans and maybe short block details so we know what we're looking at for the comparison? Thanks in advance, that info would really help anyone considering buying a SP3.

This is a very interesting thread, will you be the first to test the SP3 with track numbers or will someone scoop you?(not counting the Hersche super stock engine because TA asked them to test it) I hope you don't get any rain this weekend and that you can make it to a track!!

13.80s is respectable numbers to run with a little sbb 350, can't wait to see what the S/P does for you. If you go slower with it you just may have to re-jet the carb to get your A/F ratios back where they should be with the a lot more air flow, so don't get discouraged right away IF that happens. May just be a matter of a little tuning to dial the new intake in, you probably knew that though. GL

I wonder about front to rear distribution issues with the Q-jet on the single plane. I think it will be worse than on a single plane. You may need to delay the secondary opening until higher RPM so the mixture airflow can mask some of the imbalance front to rear. If you have a 3000 or higher stall speed then this won't help much if at all.

Looking forward to seeing the improvement in MPH especially since that is the indicator of HP. It may be you lose a little Et but gain MPH. Then you need higher stall speed convertor.
