    Hi Tom,
Thanks for the insight, even if it's not pleasant. I know the stuff is out there, but I guess we won't see it for sale until they rise in value enough to get up on ebay.....Dan

Dan, There is not a whole lot of things available right now ( trunk cardboard is reproduced however ) The chrome air cleaner top you can get from the Parts Place in Chicago, The lower door panels are the same as 71-73 ( Just Dashes quoted me $400 ea to redo mine, Ouch ) I have been using Ebay and networking with friends to find things. I also am restoring a 74 Riviera GS Stage 1 and I can tell you there are not many of these cars out there. Mine needs all the body panels as the car is rotted from sitting for so many years in a bone-yard. I have located a donor car in Illinois which I am paying off. The body is good. My car has factory air bags inside the car just like the cars today. Only 329 cars got airbags in 74, 25 in 75 and 6 in 76 not a lot at all. I may have the last airbag car for all I know. I also have Maxtrac in this car which is traction control and it works off a sensor in the left front wheel measures it in hertz sends it to a computer on the passenger side of the dash then to the transmission then to the rear wheels. I also have real leather in this car of which only 481 cars were made. The option cost $586.00 so few were made. My paint is Sand Beige of which only 1078 were made. My build sheet shows the car was made on 2/26/74 but was not registered for the first time until 7/8/76 as per my title. The car sat for 21/2 years until it sold. I have spoken to the original owner and am sending him pictures as we go along. The story of the airbag goes like this. In 73 Chevy sent out 1000 Impala's with air bags to test the waters and added it to the option list. What a mistake people screamed Chevy dropped the option package. Then in 74 GM took the Electra's, Riviera's, 98's, Toronado's and Cadillac Coupe's, Sedan's & Eldorado's and would quietly pick a bunch each day and put air bags in them. It never showed up on the window sticker or in the showroom brochures as I have one and it is not listed as an option. So people were basically forced to take the cars with airbags. You need to get Hemmings Motor News and subscribe to Old Cars Weekly as both you will need to restore your car. Good luck with your car. Your thoughts. My number is 973-927-7414 if you need help.

    Thank you,

    John A Wettengel

here is an exerpt from my 74 Electra's window sticker. ACRS (air bags) were cheaper than the AM/FM stereo system.

non acrs full sized buicks all have the same dash in 74. the only diff between the riv, electra, estate and lesabre dashes are the little emblem on the glove box door and the emblem on some of the steering wheels.

acrs cars had a different drivers ashtray (more volume and no cig lighter) and different dash cluster housing and diff trim around the radio because the radio was moved to the left a few inches in order to place the lighter to the right of the radio....... kinda stuck the lighter knob right where the "normal" tuning knob was for the radio.

and of course the lower dash pieces are pretty much acrs specific.

If you are selling the air bag parts I am interested. I need the complete steering column from the rag joint to the steering wheel and air bag. I also need the air bag assembly from the passenger side of the dash. How much do you want for these parts? Where will they ship from. I will wait to hear from you. John

Hi Gary - I already sent you an e-mail on the ACRS parts in the Olds 98 asking price. I need the steering column and the passenger side airbag assembly behind the dashboard. My airbags have leaked from sitting so long in the elements. I will pay the shipping to get it to me. The steering column separates halfway up the column under the hood. There is one bolt that holds it together then 4 bolts inside the car that hold it up to the dashboard. You will have to unplug some wire harnesses. Be cautious there is also a short thin wire for the shifter. Let me how much you want for everything and how much the shipping is. I will await your reply.

    Thanks,

    John

There are not many rivvys out there. There was a long strike in 74 crippled sales. There are 2 in the state of Wash. but by law they have to turn in the bill of sales when the car arrives so they are not able to sell whole cars sad. I have found one in Mass. which I am buying decent, 1/4's no good but other panels good base model. Good for spare parts. If you have Max-Trak on that car (the traction control option) you will find just as I have found the other day the front brake rotors are specific to that option. On the back of the drivers rotor there is a cage within the pad surface that has 20-25 dime sized holes in it. In the spindle there is a sensor screwed into it that measures the revolutions of the rotor sends that via a translucent wire hooked to the upper control arm by clips then up over the booster across the firewall in the pass side to a computer pass side then to the electronic distributor then to the speed sensor in the trans to eliminate wheel slip. Where I will find rotors I don't know. The pass side rotor is normal. Had better luck finding spare air bags for the Air Cushion Restraint System. These were factory airbags inside the car just like today's cars.

I am guessing you do not have Max-Trac as there were only five cars that came out at the beginning of 74 when the option was cut due to the fact that they could not get it to work right from it's inception in 71 model year. After 42 years I am guessing I am the last car to remain with Max-Trak. My car was built on 2/26/74 according to the build sheet I have but was not sold until 7/8/76 for the first time. I am only the second owner of this car and have the original bill of sale.

    John
