Sonic testing....hard to come by?

  1. Today I decided I would call various machine shops in the SLC area and see about getting my 455 block sonic tested. I was surprised that after about 10 or more phone calls I didn't find a shop that does this. One said they used to farm it out to a guy that would come by and provide that service but that was many years ago. He said he hasn't even been asked about sonic testing for years and years. I didn't expect this would be hard to find? Is this an operation that has mostly gone away?

I've dealt with many machine shops. The consensus seems to be there is a small ROI. 99% of customers don't care or don't know enough to have a block checked.

Sonic testing is not unique to Buicks.. common for many other makes. Even the popular ones..

Any shop without that capability is a shop to avoid.

IMHO a shop that does not spend the money for a sonic testing tool... Would more likely spends it money on sunglasses rather than shop maintenance...

In other words the equipment they got is JUNK...

You still want a recommendation for a shop familiar with Buick engines. Start a thread in the Bench.

But then again they probably have no clue how to use it let alone what its for.

Ya was going to say that also. Phoenix is just a hop from SLC.... Plus they know how to use it....

  10. True. I expanded my search and a machine shop in Vegas and one in Meridian, ID show up as advertising sonic testing. Vegas would be closer by a far bit.
