The concept that one state's motor vehicle agency could call another state seemed like a outrageous suggestion....it's the same damn country!!
It's just a VIN typo for a 54 year old car!!! What are they afraid of? What am I missing here?

I should have asked if they could accept a FAX from Idaho to see their reaction....haha
    Years ago that was acceptable.....

Seriously I suggest one of 2 routes. 1 call your local TV station and tell your story...they love these stories. Or 2 call your state rep. At some point no rational person will say that you are being treated fairly. A manager will fix it...

Not going to fly in Maryland since they didn't make the error....

Looking more & more like the easiest thing would (would've) be to go to VT & get a new title as I'd posted originally. You're caught in a bureaucratic snafu between 2 states that couldn't care less about your problem.

Or maybe find a state that would allow the vehicle/VIN to be verified & re-titled but that would still require physically taking it there so back to the new title option.

Have you called the guy in Idaho and asked him to mail you an original correction letter?

I asked him to go to motor vehicles but hasn't happened....
I said he gave me the bogus title but hard to force someone to help when they are 2/3 the way across the country 17yrs after he sold me the car....

How about using one of those old car title companies? Probably easier at this point...

    How does that work?

That's exactly what I was talking about above when I said to get a VT title h be done w/it. I need to do the same for a car I got in NY where titles aren't issues for older cars. Idk exactly how it works but it's doable.

There are companies that "buy" the car from you, retitle it at a state that has very low requirements, then "sell" it to you, providing you with the necessary new documentation. IIRC it costs a few hundred dollars.

I'm sure people here can recommend good options.

You need to get in touch with the commissioner of the DMV or secretary of transportation for MD and tell them your problem. Careful though, there's a 50% that they could be a woman.

It's not like a lost title or a no title vehicle. Just a typo but I guess they treat them the same....

Right-you don’t have a title to that car. You have a title to something else. In their binary world that is.

If Idaho was a "bill of sale" state when he bought the car you might get a bill of sale from him and see if Maryland will issue you a new registration/title and go from there. The correct VIN won't show up in their database. I bought a 1967 car in SC on a Bill of Sale and VA gave me a title on it AFTER the supervisor looked it up.

    Just shoot me.....
Talked to another title supervisor and they said they could take care of it. They said the original letter from Idaho saying error would do it. She said she would go into scheduling and get me in right away (otherwise 3-4 week wait for appt. This was thursday and she said fri 9:15. I said fine.
Get the confirmation email and it says saturday 9:15am. I figure she was thinking it was already friday whe she was doing it.
I wonder though since they used to not be full service on saturdays. I figure they must know what they are doing...really, I must be losing it to think such a thing.

Anyway I go and get there 5min in advance like they say to check in and go thru the mandatory waiting ordeal and finally my number is called.
The BIG (300+) woman at tells me that I need 3 types of proof . Letter which I have, state police VIN certification and something else...notarized letter from the pope or something.
She said also it's saturday and they can't fix stuff like that only mon-fri. GRRR

I say no way I called and talked to titling supervisor....she said who was it?....nope didn't get a name. Ask to speak to a supervisor. After another 45min wait I talk to a nice carribbean woman...only like 250lbs.....who says she can create a case and send to titling dept and they would call me next week.
She said the BIG woman was thinking odometer error thus the 3 type of documentation.
She THINKS the letter from Idaho should be enough. This time I got her business card.....

Thx. Joe - I have a car from NY I have to get a title for but didn't have a name of a place to use.

I suggested going this route early on in this thread. I know it seems ridiculous because Bruce has a title but sometimes & if possible (in this case it is) you have to go around the bureaucracy.

I had to it recently on a different issue the gov't had me jammed up on. I didn't like doing it but it worked.

Have you considered carrying a whole 1967 Buick chassis service manual in and show them that it is simply a model number typo and not a sequential VIN issue?
