Dear V-8 Buick big-block engine gurus,

Yesterday evening, the dipstick and tube arrived from the JW Masterpiece engine in my trusty 1965 Buick Special wagon:

Greg and I took a look at where this tube somehow has to sneak through and . . . . . . . . *Gulp*!! This ain't goin' to be easy!! [IMG]

Greg believes that this tube needs to somehow come past the headers somewhere in this general location:

Sure looks mighty crowded already. Okay you big-block performance freaks how did you get the dip stick tube around the headers?

    Cheers, Edouard :beer

I know your heads and headers are quite different than mine, but I'd still expect the tube to come up by the #5 spark plug behind the #5 exhaust tube as referenced from the head bolts.

This is the only picture I could find of mine.

PS, I've never had any luck/room installing the dipstick tube while the engine was in the car. The master cylinder always got in the way.

Another picture from another angle. I'm pretty sure your dipstick has to go behind the #5 tube and right next to the #5 spark plug. Probably right between the sparkplug wire bracket on your valve cover.

Thanks . . Will forward!! (Re: Thread the dipstick tube around long-tube headers!?!?)

Dear Randall, Devon, and V-8 Buick engine gurus,

Thanks for the information and pictures. Greg was worried that he might have to at least rock the engine up to get the tube in. However, this might be a case where haste makes waste and more will have to be dismantled. Could be another case of Greg getting caught being a Chebby kind of guy while working a very different animal.

Thanks Devon for the link. That thread has a link to another brand of tube. If things get really tough might have try another model. That brand is specifically designed for Stage-2 heads.

    Oh well, we'll see.

Thanks again for the rescue!! :TU:

    Cheers, Edouard :beer

Hopefully these pics help a little. I ended up removing the bracket and making my own to suit. I did have to bend the tube slightly for spark plug socket clearance using a small tube bender.
It does require a small amount of effort to remove/install the dipstick now that the tube is bent more than stock, but I can live with that.

This is the stock replacement type from TA.

Dear Royden and V-8 Buick fans of "assertive" engines,

Thanks for the additional photos. I just checked with Orinda Motors and Greg was pulled off my trusty wagon because Orinda Motors is overwhelmed with "returning from vacation" repair work. However, Greg should be back on my trusty wagon by Friday and I'll make sure he is armed with these photos before then.

Thanks for the rescue everybody!! :TU:

    Cheers, Edouard :beer
