i pulled the engine in bits a year ago and thankfully its now going back together. On the ignition wiring i have a black wire. Should this go to negative on the coil? Is this just a negative ground wire?

Black wire from distributor goes to the - side of the coil.

its the black wire from the loom, i presume this goes to the same place? "-" on the coil?

Usually the only other wire on the negative side of the coil should be for a tach. Factory tach wire is brown

No, the negative side of the coil goes directly to the distributor, it does not come from the loom. Yes, the ballast resistor or wire goes in line with the wire to the positive side of the coil, but you also need a bypass wire from the starter solenoid to jump out the resistance while the engine is cranking to start. Yes, the only other wire to go to the negative side of the coil is the tachometer signal.
