    Hello together,

    I have a quick question:

I have a leaking shifter shaft seal on my TH2004R behind my BBB 1971 GS, and would like to ask you guys if I (hopefully not) have to drain the trans before putting in a new one.

Doesn`t seem to be much of a deal to put in a new seal but then, if all that ATF comes flowing out, it could be a not so nice surprise.

    Thanks for your help

Seems to me the answer would be obvious if you look at the fluid level. When the engine is shut down, you get a certain amount of drain back into the pan, raising the level on the dipstick. So look at the level of fluid on the stick, and the level of the shifter shaft, and that's how much will pour out when you remove the leaking seal. Unless you have a drain plug, I would think you need to drop the pan.

Thanks Larry, thought about that too, but I was wondering if there was maybe an inside seal too that was keeping the fluid from getting to the outer seal in greater proportions.
I`ll drain some, have an electric fluid pump, and put it back in afterwards.

I wouldn't drop the pan. You could easily pull the driveshaft and let it drain out the tailshaft or simply yank the seal out of the shifter and let it drain out what it's going to puke out the hole. You can press the new seal in while it's still leaking. Its a press fit not a gasket.

Put a 6×6 under frt & rr drivers side tires to 'tilt the soup bowl':D

I've done MANY of these. No need for a drain pan even. Once the seal is out check the shaft for any roughness & install the new seal. They make a tool for this that makes the job of removing & installing a piece of cake so to say.

Mine was leaking and I swapped it by jacking it up on the driver side and it didn't leak any at all. I also replaced the speedo driven gear seal the same way.

Sounds good to me,easy to tackle since I don't have a lift, just two ramps. Thanks for your info.

And thanks for all your help, really appreciate it.

    All the best.
