    tubecatgs Finally a 4 speed......

I have a competition plus shifter that seems a little loose. Is is cheaper to have someone rebuild it or should i look for a good used one. I have a 5335 handle that needs rechroming and same thing... is it cheaper ro rechrome or get a new one.

Anyone here do one or the other?

    Thanks
    Brad

Any used one you get is going to need to be gone through. Ive rebuilt several of these. The Hurst master rebuild kit is $100 and basically has all the wear items in it. You'll more than likely need the insulators and clips for the handle. Those are $50. So your into it for $150 just for parts plus shipping. You may need to replace the selector pin carrier as well which is $15. I'd probably just get one anyway if your going to have it apart.

For the most part, its pretty straightforward except for the reverse detent spring which is a real SOB to install if you've never done it before. You can ship it to me along with the parts and I'll be happy to rebuild it for you for the cost of one 12 pack of Heineken.

The other option would be to but a new Hurst 3138 mechanism for $350. BUT, you'll still need the insulators and clips for $50 with this. Then you can sell your old one and recoup some of the expense .
