I have heard the numbers have gone up from the 400 that was posted. Keep on Jim, we don't want him resting down there.

I was running the TA intake after having some porting work done on my '69 heads. I put the stock '69 intake back on to run a pure stock race and was surprised to find the car picked up .2 with the stock intake over the TA !! It also felt better at lower rpms.:Do No:

Dave, after talking to you today, I took a break, and went back after it , you know, second shift.
Anyway, the 350 engine is now making 435 horsepower and 434 torque.
The limiting factor at this point is definately the intake manifold, by changing from a 1 inch 4 hole spacer last night to a 1 inch open spacer this evening, we picked the horsepower up to around 410. I then decided to toss on a 2 inch open spacer, holy cow batman, 435 horsepower. The other really interesting thing is that with the 4 hole spacer , we were making peak horsepower at 5100 rpm, now, we are at 5600, and actually it was still climbing.
    It's still making right at 400 ft'lbs at 3000 rpm .
This little 350 is gonna rock. Jim Burek

Is the motor bored 30 over? What kind of heads are they? This should give those BBC's a run for their money, and is exciting for all of us! I know what I am saving up to do!

Wow Rob, that will really be cool! My GS was a 350/350turbo all original setup when I bought it. I always wondered what a 4 gear would have been like. The 350 was tired, but it could really launch off of the line. Major traction problems. Good luck, I would love to see what it can do! Let us know!

BIg Daddy Don Garlets tip of the day.

    "a 1 1/2in to 2in spacers is good for an easy 15-20hp."

I remember that one from way back when he use to do tips on drag racing.
    \

I run 1 1/2 on mine an it was / is a noticeable improvement. though I was limited some in parts. Used 1/2in 4 hole near the carb then a 1in open on the intake side.

With the intake being a limiting factor the lspacer lets the fuel mix better so what little gets in, is mixed muched better. Thus more power.

Would be neat if you kept testing. see how many inches is to much and try some mixed combo's of open n 4 hole.

Awesome numbers!!! Its wild the torque is staying above 400 as the horsepower continues to climb too:cool: I have a 4 hole spacer on my Stage 1 intake and always wondered if an open spacer would increase my top end pull. My intake has been port matched to my ported 69 heads with TA's big stainless valves. The bowls have been opened up also. My low end is awesome, and it pulls to 6000 rpm, but I'd gladly trade a bit of my excessive torque on the bottom for a bit more top end charge. Has the divider been cut down in the Stage 1 intake at all? Mark

The divider has been cut down aprox 3/4 of an inch. Jim Burek

correct me if I'm wrong but I've been told the 4 hole spacers are for low end take off torque [ llike a Buick doesn't have enough] and the open spacers are for hi end HP.

    That's good news!
I have been unsucessful in trying to get the rich / lean cyls evened out with the TA. I really don't think that it is possible!!!

I'm really happy with the numbers Jim is getting on the dyno. What's cool is I'm sure there's alot more power to unleash from the engine. Jim called me up last night to tell me the numbers while I was in between calls with the wrecker, road service, and dispatch as my truck broke down and that was the one thing that put a smile on my face. I thought I was going to have one of those bad nights, but thankfully that didn't happen. Hopefully with all this testing it'll show people that the 455 isn't the only performance orientated engine out there. I'm sure when it's all done my car will be able to run big blocks :)

What is your intentions with the motor? Is it streetable?

    Very impressive!:TU:

Gees Jim... You keep getting more hp out of my brother's motor, I am going to have a hard time keeping up! Good Job though! I am glad that you are taking the effort to show that the 350 is not just junk. Figuring Rob's motor out on the desktop dyno, it was showing between 425 and 445 on the hp range and the torque in the 415 range. With the setup I am giving my 350, I will be roughly 20 -25 hp less so its going to be a fun challenge in racing against Rob. Plus since we both have 4 speeds, it will just add to the excitement. We do need more after-market parts though! With what parts that are available, its going to be hard to pass the 450 hp barrier on just straight motor. The desktop dyno says that if we had a single plane intake, we would get an additional 70 hp!
The one nice thing about the 350 is that it levels the playing field when competing against other 350's. It would all come down to tuning and skill on the straight away which to me equals more enjoyment. With this thread I hope more people think about building up a 350 instead of replacing it with its larger brother.

This engine will be an aggressive street/strip motor. It will be mated to a 4-speed so I don't have to worry about getting the correct stall for a convertor, my foot takes care of that. I think the manual transmission offers alot more driveability than an automatic. The only bad part about it is consistancy off the line in a drag race.

After reading my brother's comment, I don't think he wants to hear the horsepower readings of my engine constantly going up, as he'll have a harder time keeping up, ha ha! The numbers Jim was able to produce with my engine surpass those of the desktop dyno and there's alot more tuning to go :) I guess we'll just wait and see if we can get over the 450 hp mark. This is all being done on the TA intake and we still have the Poston S-Divider to go, so it's not over yet!

Congrats, sounds like there has been a ton of effort and dedication to the buick 350 by you guys. AMEN! GOOD ON YA!
This has inspired me to spend my time and money on the 350 instead of a 455. Thanks, this will help all of us. What kind of heads are on this motor?

Thanks Guys:TU: I figure sooner or later we have push the limit. The only way we'll get any attention for more aftermarket parts is if we show that there is great interest in pushing these engines farther in performance. Once people see there's a market for the small block as a performance engine, so will the manufactures. I know this engine will give a few big blocks a run for their money and that will be the most fun.

The heads are '70 castings that are fully ported with oversized valves. Jim ported the heads out to flow 270 cfm's on the intake and 185 cfm's on the exhaust. There's alot of money here, but you need these if you want the power.
