I bought a set of re-build seals for the heater box and rebuilt my heater core assy.

Included in the set of foam seals is this one that goes under the cover in the engine compartment.

However, the foam gasket covers the entire flat face of the cover. And I distinctly remember scraping off goo so I have some of that white caulk ropes sold for sealing things up. This stuff.

I'm thinking maybe they didn't have a foam seal in there originally and I should just use this caulk sealant stuff. Otherwise the caulk will have to be put on the foam gasket and seal the cover to the gasket which doesn't sound right.

So, do I just use the white stuff to seal the heater box on? What have you guys done
    Thanks in advance.

There are 5 little hard foam "washers" that affix to the studs (firewall side) and act as a seal in place of that whole gasket.

I didn't take my firewall side box off and the only goo I scraped off/added was where the heater core sits. I used 3M Strip-Calk.
    See below.

Other than that, none on the outer edges of the interior box and none anywhere on the outside heater box on the firewall.

I was very careful to not break the seal of that firewall side box, both in an effort to keep the factory look but to also lessen my chances for leaks.

Hmmmm. The box inside the car has a foam seal on it's face. PLUS the whole thing will clamp down against the firewall pad so I can't imagine getting air leaks inside around all that.

The outside under hood part will just use the rope caulk.

Maybe they used that seal on the earlier models but I know it wasn't there when I removed mine.

The original heater core was still intact and had been plugged years earlier.

You can see the seal already glued onto the face of the inside heater box. That seal will then press down against the firewall pad.

    Jon-
Where’d you get your heater box seals?

    Thanks,

I bought the rebuild kit back when I disassembled the car, so maybe 8-10 years ago. I have no idea who I bought them from but I think it was probably off ebay.

I think Ames and maybe Todd have the heater seal kit.

    Thanks!
The Pontiac and Buick A/C heater boxes are the same? I'll check it out! Thanks!

This is what I found out regarding my situation (67 GS w/AC):

Ames Performance has a heater box seal kit for a 67 wo/AC but not w/AC.
Todd (Stage Won Restoration) has a seal kit for 68 – 72 w/AC but not for a 67.
But, Inline Tube has a seal kit for a 64 – 67 GM A-Body w/AC, so I found a winner! Thanks for the suggestions!

    Thanks,

Never have seen a foam seal on those? I had several I took off junked cars and only had the black goop like strip caulk and the foam washers mentioned. After assembly drivers side heater box perimeter was sprayed rather sloppily with a black sealant. I like to replicate that with either 3M undercoating or Phil Swift Flex seal in spray can. Engine side heater box was gloss black and firewall much flatter. All the inside boxes were flat black. I have a few originals. Who goes the extra mile and paints the heater core clips Robin’s egg blue?
