Wanting a good set of gears I can run on the street as well as the strip. I’ll be using slicks at the strip. I’ve seen 8620 mentioned several times. I don’t want to throw money away and the tech lines aren’t much help.

I think the setup is the most important to long term longevity.

The car will see more street use than strip. I’ll just need an extra set of eyes to make sure I’m doing it right. Thanks for the information

Worry about the set-up ...As Sean said....THAT is going to make the or break the gears. THEN do not for get the break in of the NEW gears...Another thing that people mess up .
Most ring and pinion brand names companies are going to be Just fine.
    Richmond (really Motive)

Nitro gear and axle _I Like there gears never had an issue once with them.

Thanks Jim. My brother has the correct tools for getting it set up. Maybe I can get him to give me a hand

Go slow be patient till the pattern and backlash are correct. Then do you final assembly with the crush sleeve seal and get your pinion preload in and final backlash preload adjustment.
Have fun post pics here if you need help or on JD Race.com.

Rule of thumb... transbrake or stick shift with high rpm clutch drop, 9310 material... everything else generally works fine with the 8620 gears.

8620 gears, regardless of setup, will only live to a point behind a transbrake.. I found that point years ago in our mid 11 second 4100 lbs gs.. just did a new 4.30 gear setup in the 12 bolt.. with street gears.. broke it on the third pass.. though I screwed up, until I saw it sheered three teeth of the ring gear, right off at the root.

Installed 9310 gears in the same application with the same setup, lasted well over 10 years and hundreds of passes, in a couple different cars..

Weight of car is another factor...Been trans braking for 10 years on 8.5 street garbage gears to prove the point of regular gears set-up correctly can be and do extreme stuff...ALL people have to evaluate their needs and speed and buy accordingly.
I do not know how many passes you do...BUT normally Pro gears just do not last that long at least bracket racing. We use street gears well into the 9 sec range on bracket cars no issues. Might have had a defect in the gear it is possible.
BUT again...do what works for you. If you have a good track record you keep on doing it. :) Jim
