So a couple of weeks ago I went to evilBay and purchased the above mirror. My expectation was that I would tear the outside mirror apart and send it off to have the pot metal housing repaired and rechromed.
Yesterday I started tearing down the mirror by breaking out the mirror glass (hey, I’ve been married for 48years, how much more bad luck can I have?). I expected to find that the mirror glass was glued in place, but I found out that the glass was held in place with a steel ring around the perimeter of the housing. See PICs below.

As the steel ring appears to be one piece I do see a way to get the ring out of there. In my case over the years the ring appears to have bonded itself to the housing, which does surprise me. I sprayed PB Blaster around the perimeter of the ring, hoping that it will break up the corrosion and loosen the ring.

Beyond that I do not see a way to remove the steel ring from the housing once the corrosion is broken up. And if there is a way to get the ring out of the housing, it has to be a tough task to get the ring back into place without breaking the mirror glass after I get the housing all pretty.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

Max Damage I'm working on it!

If there is a split in the ring (it looks like there is) you need to go to the end and pull on it with some needle nose pliers. Now don't ask me how to get it back in without breaking the glass!

On 67 mirrors there is a split ring that you remove, and then the glass will come out. I've pulled number of them. Now if it has corroded it may be harder.

I’ll look at it again but I didn’t see a split. I think what you see is actually a scratch, where somebody tried to get something sharp between the housing and the ring. The housing is also damaged there. What I’m talking about is to the left of the red arrow.

    Thanks,
