these are the repro M/T headers that the club did, I cant remember how many years ago now. The passenger side sits really, really low. As you can see from the pics, the pass side is almost 3/4" lower, and the collector does not sit parallel to the frame. Is this a common issue ? The collectors also hit the crossmember, and the mini starter also rubs against the header. Car is a non air 71 Stage1 car, with a 4 speed.
I had to trim away parts of my cross member that hit the MT flanges. I think that is pretty common. My mini starter doesn't come anywhere near my headers. My MT's are pretty even height wise.
I've never worked with the MT headers specifically, but I have installed headers in many cars.. these are normal issues. I don't think anyone in the history of the world has been 100% happy with header fitment, with the possible exception of the guy who designed them..
4-speed and TH350 are shorter transmissions than the TH400. As such, the transmission crossmember bolts to the chassis differently, it is moved forward a few inches, uses the forward set of frame holes. This causes the collectors to contact the x member
I had similar issues with my 70 gs455, 4 speed at the cross member. Required a little ball-peen massaging.
That can be expected. That’s actually very good. Most headers just have the 3” or 3.5” collector passing under the transmission crossmember, which can be a tight fit,but those headers still have all 4 tubes at that point. Something like the G-Force crossmember might remedy that since it is designed for better header clearance.
I remember carefully heating up and sticking a long "pole" into I think the right side header to bend it down a bit. Chrome where heated seemed to still look ok.
The Chevelle cross member is a better solution,...or like I did on my dad's 4speed car,..made a custom one from chrome moly 1 5/8 tube
Lemons Headers makes crossmembers too. Light weight I believe. http://www.lemonsheaders.com/products/cvlxl.htm
I don't understand why the G-Force doesn't go straight across. Does the angle on the ends do some good?
That G force cross member is heavvvvyyyyy. look at Lemons. It’s built for exhaust clearance. Mr. and Mrs. Lemons are real nice people. All their products built in house. I was there last year.
Looking at it some more it appears that the design would allow it to support trans that are further back in the chassis - so if you set you engine/trans back it would help. Yeah, I'm sure the Lemons are nice folks and have a great product, but I'm not happy about the price. Do they ever have a sale?
No no But the products work. I have friends with their headers. All nice fit. My headers haven’t fallen apart yet so I work w my hookers on my Velle.
I have $85 in my chrome moly xmember,.... There is pics of it posted on here somewhere Check with ABC performance
They have a lightweight version now that has a bunch of cutouts in it. I will post some pictures of that. I mainly wanted to show the arches for the increased header clearance.
