I thought this video did a good job of showing the process of replacing an open diff with posi.

If you decide to bake the bearings, 300° F at 1 to 1.5 hours poses less of a risk of them annealing than the video's suggested 450° F for 20 minutes.

Having never done this before, I think I prefer the chassis manual s process to set pinion depth.

Pinion depth is all a mess...lol. He put .030 as a starter then did his depth of adding .012 that is .042.... never did one 12 bolt with a .042 shim never over .040 as a matter of fact. PLEASE be careful with all these videos. Just go by the pattern you can never go wrong on a ring and pinion.
Ring gear install almost NEVER slips on like he had...lol. they press on. If you use the bolts to pull the bearing on do all of them little by little criss cross pattern. Use a axle shaft spline up, in the vise put the posi unit on the spline of the axle shaft to tighten your ring gear bolts. He did not use RTV sealant on the pinion seal.... WE can go on and on tearing up this video. I have the 12 bolt Chevy CAR seals...!!! They make them.
Remember videos get edited... They never show all the headaches that go with doing projects like this.

HAve fun and remember Brian and I are here to bounce questions off of when you need. (as long as you are not in a HUGE rush. :)

I’ve seen countless vids on “how easy” it is to do a posi conversion and new gears “it’s easy” they say:rolleyes:
Gotta have the knowledge and tools to do it

I spent the last few weeks at work assembling planet carriers, center shafts, ring gears, etc so I think I'm an expert now haha

My '72 Riv already has 3.42 posi but based on the whooshing sound after coming to a complete stop and a leak from the pinion yoke, I suspect at minimum the bearings and pinion seal need to be replaced (that is if the gears look good).

Since it's the 9 3/8" diff, if the gears are no good, I'll have to find a 8.5" rear end from a '71 to '76 B, C, or E body (or maybe mid-90's caprice or impala ss), or more preferably, ask Brian or Jim to build a rear end. I just wish they lived in Peoria, ILL lol

Just see if the pinion nut is too loose or too tight. IF you think no one was in there ever it is likely the pinion nut came loose. If some one did at one time do the pinion seal they likely over tightened the pinion nut and burned up the pinion bearing.
    Guesses from info I have.
