When changing the rear axle fluid what do you use to seal the cover to housing?

    A gasket
    A gasket maker
    Or both together?

    Thanks.

    RTV silicone or both.

The 1969 Service Manual says to use a gasket but a gasket only will leak. What was used from the factory?

Probably a gasket. When I had my mechanic replace the fluid in the rear end, he used Permatex black sealant instead of a gasket.

If it is a chrome cover scuff the sealing surface with a scotch bright pad to give the chrome surface some etching so the RTV or other sealant has something to grab.

Thanks. Mine is the original cover.
