Im no expert on TQ's or anything for that matter, but far as I know the 1000cfm were aftermarket pieces only no reproduction parts are available I know of, the center section that is being made is rather pricey and is for the 850street units, the CS carbs are different animals insided and out, just what you find via ebay ,forums etc. I owned one for a little bit and loved the the throttle response , but never could get it working correctly on the Secondary side. Price wise is between $175 to $500 from when I had mine, My advice is unless your just after that little bit buick speed part nostalgia, id stay with a nice Qjet or a mech secondary Holley

the carter super thermoquads are very good carbs, ive had several, i have a 850 and a 1000 right now, you can get a rebuild kit from greg gessler, 50 bucks, usually all that need changing is the accelerator cup rubber, he sells that seperatly, the difference between the 850 and the 1000, is the lid, the 850 has 2 booster rings the 1000 has one, the main body and throttle plate are the same, ive used both alot, my 69 judge 455 12 sec street car w a/c, i ran both the 850 and 1000, a little better drivability w the 850 about same perfaormance, pm me if your dad has any competition series 850s 1000s are parts, they have a decal on the top says competition series, id be a buyer if he is selling thanks ronnie

I'd just like to add a correction. The main body is different between the 1000 and 850 Competition Series. The 850 has a noticeable venturi in the primary bores while the 1000 has a "shadow" of one in its bores. I agree with the double and single ringed boosters.

There was a 9800 series TQ made after the CS went out of production rated at 800 cfm. Kenne-Bell recommended it as a replacement for a Q-Jet. One good thing it had going for it was it had an electric choke.

I've been running TQ's since the late 70's when I got a 1000 unit for $80 from an Oldsmobile guy. In my experience either the 850 or 1000 is noticeably faster than just about any Q-Jet right out of the box. When I ran the TQ vs. a Holley 1000 HP on a chassis dyno there was only a 5 HP/5 TQ gain for the Holley. At the track I couldn't tell if there was a difference. Right now I'm running a 1000 top on a 850 center section hybrid on my '76 Century weighing in at 4250 lbs and it has run 11.31@120. There might be something to the Holley at the performance level I'm at now so I may be rechecking it this year. I ran basically the same carb when the car was only running 13.7's with 2.73 gears. IMO the carb will run on just about any combo much like a Q-Jet can, only faster.

From what I understand the Super Stock Mopar guys look for them because they are a legal replacement for the factory Thermoquad some of the cars came with.

I agree w you, the idle calibration, and part throttle, mixture seem to be spot on on most 455 combos, I've been running em on 455 Pontiacs for along time, and I don't see any measurable perf difference w a big Holley either, what I do see is better economy and cruise ability, I've run 11.70s w mine, I keep saying a 125 hp shot will take care of any additional perf I may need!
