CARS stocks Riv 401 engine mounts, but says Riv. GS 425 engine mounts must be sent in for re-manufacturing. Probably take a month or more. What is the difference? Durometer? Shouldn't they look physically identical? Lots of folk sell mounts that "fit" both 401s and 425s, but they may not know what they are talking about. Guidance, please.
I am in way disparaging CARS -- I try to use them whenever possible. But if it is simply a matter of higher durometer for a higher performance engine, well, I ain't gonna be racing it anyway so who cares?
Check with Buick Farm. I know they had new 65-66 Skylark GS mounts in stock. They may have the Riviera in NOS or reproduction form
Some of these mounts were interconnected. These prevented the engine from rotating if the mount failed. Maybe that is the case here. Cheryl
In the mid 60's parts books Buick speced out a distinct mount for the Riv GS model. I have parted out many 65 Rivs in the last 4 plus decades and I have only found one set of Nailhead motor mounts that have a built in locking feature but I could not determine if they were genuine GM issue....too oil soaked and deteriorated. However, they were installed on a very original but rusty and worn out 65 Riv GS. I have been scrutinizing NOS mounts for decades trying to find the "missing link" but have thus far been unsuccessful. So the answer to your question is yes, there is evidence to suggest Buick speced out a distinct mount for the Riv Gran Sport model but in the field both the 401 and 425 engines are equipped with the same mount. Not sure what Cars is doing with their mount if anything. Tom Mooney
I decided to order standard engine mounts that reportedly fit. I will then compare the new ones to ones currently on the car. If there is a difference that matters, I can then send the existing ones out for vulcanizing while at least still having the ordered mounts under the engine.
My 65 Wildcat has a cable from the left upper control arm shaft to one of the head bolts to limit engine movement if left mount fails. There was a recall, or "campaign" as they called them back then, and it was dealer installed. Still see the recall kits for sale sometimes. This has been discussed in more than one thread here over the years.
Confirming what Tom (Wildcat GS) posted, the part number in July 1965 parts book for 1965 Riv GS mount is 1375668 and that is its only application . By 1973 it was no longer available.
One thing I've learned in this hobby is that your the expert, not the vendor. Don't rely on thier knowledge. I'm quite sure that they're only going by what the parts books are saying and not going by real world experience.
