The engine is currently on the stand with the intake, pan exhaust manifolds removed . Probably removed 3/4 of the dirt/ grease on the engine with Zep degreaser, brake cleaner and lots of wire brushing. Before priming any recommendations for a final wipe down?
After I get all the dirt/grease off (usually with a solvent and wire brush), I wipe it down a couple times with a oil/wax remover. Similar to what I use on body panels prior to painting. I prefer to have all the parts on (oil pan, valve covers, intake)... easier to paint and a lot less taping, unless you have one of those pretty aluminum intakes you don't want red.
Ordered gaskets , primed a few more parts, looking for that elusive Windage tray. If anyone knows of someone who has one contact me.
Nice work - I'd in the middle of this as well. Yours is far cleaner than mine! My engine is assembled cover to pan. I plan to use VHT caliper cleaner last then VHT high temp primer. So far I've used a steam cleaner and wire brushes to get the thick greasy crud off after soaking in formula 88 de-greaser, then a combination of brake cleaner, mineral spirits, and lacquer thinner. The brake cleaner worked the best but it doesn't go far! I'm currently working the wire wheel on a drill to get the burned on stuff off.
Yes Brett, I was told by someone locally that the 400-455 tray was the same and the person had one . After double checking that mis- information the one in your picture looks correct Brett . The interchange is years 1968-1977
