I have a set of nicely ported iron 455 heads for sale. Were removed from a customer's motor, was running good, to switch over to TA al.heads. 69 heads converted to stage1 sizes using chevy valves and dual springs w/ damper. 150lb at 1.81", 1.08" coil bind. 61cc chambers. $1050.
LOL Flow #s. Why does everyone get so caught up on flow #s? Sure they look good on paper to have, but mean squat in real time condition performance. I'd rather have heads that work with crappy #s than heads that don't with great #s, and this does happen more than people think.
You're absolutely right Mike. I've seen many times cars with better head flow #'s not perform better or the same as the heads taken off. Flow might look good at .700 lift but the combo likes better flow at .500. The track is the true dyno, the dyno may be useful for timing adjustments and carb tuning, or bragging rights.
Yes,flow numbers can be something, but not everything, unless you are racing flow benches. I’ve had some heads with some very extensive, exotic work that didn’t exactly raise eyebrows when they were on the flow bench, but the engine made exceptional power and backed it up going down the track.
I have seen a great deal of junk come across my bench so flow numbers are quite important! A picture of the chamber and bowl work could answer those questions.
Thank you Gary, given you opinion and experience do you feel that 150# on the seat, is that right on or a tick high for mid .500 lift hydraulic tappet cam
I'd say a little high I have another set of the same springs about 15lb less at same installed height. Or chevy has retainers that are offst for more height.
I forgot chevy has locks you can get to raise or lower that installed height by .050 if you know the degree to match the retainer
