...as in worn valve guides, for instance?

If I have head issues I could always just swap out the heads from my parts engine.

Well I did an oil change today and decided to go with Shell Rotella T 15w-40 and my car seems to be running a LOT smoother than it was before the oil change, WAY less noise and no more knocking at startup. :) It's going to be a while before I'll be able to get a new cam/lifters though... Has anyone else used Rotella? Any problems?

I would advise against running the car at all with the flat lobes on the cam, metal is floating around in there and only getting worse. You may have to remove the oil pan and clean the pickup screen when you take the engine appart to put the new cam in. Also remember to do 3 or 4 oil and filter changes after you get the new cam/lfiters in there. It will take a few changes to get the metal flakes out of the engine.

I have used the Rotella a lot in worn out engines that require some thicker oil to keep the oil pressure up. The only thing you must be careful of is that the oil pressure will be really high when you start up the car, so be sure you let the engine warm up for a bit before you rev it up or else you can have issues due to too much oil pressure. When the oil is good and warm the pressure is lower and can safely be revved up.

Isn't that what the oil filter does????

To some degree yes, but it will take a while to get all the metal out of the engine. I am sure lots of metal gets past the filter.
