WOW, that's one hell of an investment in "tools"
I applaud anyone that makes that kind of commitment to their trade:cool:

This along with 35 years of experience building Buick engines is what sets him apart from other builders. Oh and his son is a machinist.

300 is getting to where it's really worth it depending on what the mid range valve lift #'s look like. What's TA's claim (or do they?) on their highest level (3?) Porting on these? Also, is Scotty doing a CNC porting routine on them yet?

I haven’t seen any flow tests from TA over 260, but I have iron heads here that flow 285 so they better get working on them! I haven’t spoken to Scotty Brown lately so I’m not sure if he is done the CNC program yet or not.

with the alum 455 heads TA bought a set of professionally ported heads, digitally copied them, CNC porting program and then sold them as their own so I’m sure they will do the same once we perfect them.

285 out of iron heads quite impressive. Lmk if you ever want to sell them (we may have talked about this already) - They'd be awesome for the stock "appearing" 350 build I want to do.

I may end up selling one of my engines, it’s a 12.8:1 forged internal 355 with the 285 iron heads. A person could likely paint a TA intake to make it look factory. We will do all the dyno testing before anything is decided.

11.5:1 to run on E85. AutoTec pistons, Molner rods. Carb from Horsepower Innovations. St3 intake. Roller lifters on a Scott Brown cam.
It’s going in an ‘81 Regal with a converter from JW and a TH-350c that I’m going to rebuild myself.
I’ll start a thread when I get a little further along. I’ve got most of the parts collected.

Not all flow benches are the same. I have a hard time believing 285 CFM out of an iron 350 head. That is what the best fully ported iron 455 head can flow.

Wether it can or not they are not on any 350 and the number means nothing if sitting on a shelf.

So a level 1 porting on aluminum heads is 260 and the Iron is at 285 so 3+ grand to get 260 and the iron is at 285 what is wrong with this picture?

It was over $3000 to get 285 out if the iron heads.

Yes there as two types of flow testing setups. The type that are accurate and the type that are not. My head porter has well over 100,000 worth of top of the line calibrated equipment.

Here is 265 proven. A few more cfms are available. Shaffiroff and Bill M also hit 285 flow and made 550 HP Na and over 1000 on boost. Bobb Mackey had the heads at 260 and that one was 430 Hp NA and 630 on low boost. My head porter has broken most of the records for head flow on iron and alum 455 heads. In fact TA re-creates his porting.

My two (self-imposed) criteria for the build I want to do are streetable & 100% stock "appearing" & while I agree that a TA intake & alum heads could be made to look pretty much stock (I haven't looked at the intakes side by side in a long time & have never looked at the heads side by side) I think at this point, I'm inclined to want to run iron heads/intake. I guess depending upon how stock appearing I could make them look that's subject to change. Just in the thinking stages right now.

12.8 might be a bit much for the "streetable" part but lmk anyway if you decide to sell it.

The good iron heads on my spare engine would give about 11:1 which would be okay I think. The spare engine has 10:1 forged TRW pistons, ARP throughout and was about 600 Hp with stock unported heads on boost. Was 9.3:1 comp with 58 cc pistons. Tom Miller did a very cool 11:1 350 with ported irons, iron intake and exhaust manifolds with TA212 cam so although it wanted good fuel it was streetable and smooth idle. I think it ran 12s in the quarter, I will find it.

I’m not sure if you knew this however when Bill Mah and Scott did the 1021 HP engine they used a massively modified iron 350 intake! They had better fuel distribution this way vs a TA intake. They hit 550 Hp NA

Not sure I was aware that it was an iron intake on that engine. 11:1 is probably max. for a streetable iron head engine and maybe even a tad high but...

I’ve got a bunch of ported irons too, most of them are around 58 cc, less flow but way more street friendly.

Sounds good - We'll be talking as I get closer on this build. I need to get the car done (basket case '70 GS 350 4-sp) but I'm anxious to build an engine! Might have to do that & throw it in a Skylark in the meantime - Ya' know, just to get it dialed in:).
