Robert, I don't know a thing about these early transmissions, other then the date codes that I have been working on. You could have a replacement or earlier version, but someone with more knowledge would have to tell you. Maybe Walt will get on and give the answer. I have a theory about the raised bumps (based on info from other types of transmissions), but both Mark Asher's and Ted Nagel's trans were apparently cast/assembled at almost the same time and I need some others to cross reference. I don't need that info, but it would be nice to add it. A trip to my friend that builds 3 & 4-speeds may be in order. He builds something like 70 or more Muncies a year, and has cases/parts everywhere, but I hate to bug him. Duane
I checked my other trannie in the Wildcat 4-speed convertible and it looks like the paint is too thick (over restored) or all the detail was blasted away. :ball: But this one looks sharp. Ted
worm ( speedo ) gear holdown I believe this is from my 65 4-spd T-10 ?? but does anyone know for sure ? Moz
Gary, that one doesn't look like the same one I have. Can you get a tighter shot and throw in a couple of dimensions? Mark
Okay Guys, Here are some shots of my Aug '65 built '65 GS. Tailshaft date is 3-24-65. First is an overall shot showing the remains of the painted-on ID code. 'KR' was used in 3.36, 3.55, 3.73, and 3.90 equipped '65 GS Skylarks.
Side covers This trans, and my 2 '66 4 speeds all use the cast iron side cover....There is a date code on the inside of the cover. Duane, there's another date code version on this '62 on e-bay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...&rd=1&item=8044798030&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
Production code And finally, the Production code stamped next to the side cover.... This one is WG 65 2 Should this code also be on the protecto-plate?
Did I ever tell you guys how much I "love" manual transmissions. Thanks for the pics and info Walt. Duane
Production code Found the info on D&L's page: http://www.dandltransmission.com/borgratio.html >Quote... All Borg Warners carry assembly data code (example: WA1923, W = Warner trans., A = January, 19 = day of month, 2 = production year, 3 = shift 1,2,3). No I's used in transmission assembly or casting codes. That indicates my case was built July 6, 1965. Tailshaft was stamped March 24, 1965 Car was built 4th week of August, 1965 Duane....can you verify: Case is 020....cast on Jan 20th? Side cover is F24....is that June 24?
Walt, Your case casting date is "D20" not "020". Some of the codes are real hard to read. (I did the same thing the first time I looked at those codes.) Your 65 GS T-10 trans would decode as follows Case-Cast "D20" (April 20, 1965) Side Cover-Cast "F24" (June 24, 1965) Tailshaft-Cast (March 24, 1965) Transmission assembly date "WG65 2" (Borg Warner July 6, 1965, during the second shift) Which would be perfect for an August 65 car. So do I get an "A". Walt, I would like to use your picture of the cast iron side cover. Looks like the 19th revision for this page is coming. Duane
Not only do you get an 'A', you get to have a GOLD STAR pasted on your forehead! Let me know if you need a better pic, as far as sizing, or better lighting. Thanks
Walt, I will let you know if I need a better pic, but I think it will be fine. I want to thank everyone for helping. This info plus some confirming info that I just got from Pat will allow me to finally put this page of the book to rest. Duane
Andrew, I think mine has 3 rings on the input. Mine also has a 12/17/64 date on the tailshaft. My car was built 5/65. Mark
