Did I read once that there were decals to place over the chrome when you paint rims? Cant find the thread. Or any suggestions before i break out the painters tape and exacto knife. Thanks.

I bought some of those stencils. Don't waste your money. I had way better results using good painters tape and a razor knife. The stencils don't fit all that great, and are harder to line up than just putting the tape on oversized and trimming it. You need to mask off the rest of the rim too. I used a combination of masking tape and plastic for that. I was very happy with the end results.

I agree not to waste your time or money on the stencil. I used yellow or green frog tape found in any paint/ home improvement store. I used a pencil and my fingernail to work it into the grove then trim with razor. 2F220C54-BB25-4ABE-A6E1-CEE36E257B74.jpeg

Appreciate it. Stencils don’t look much easier. I did it 20 years ago to these rims with tape looks like thats how i will do it again. Just always looking for an easier way. Lol. Thanks

Also - I use cardboard to cover the slots and tape for the lug holes to keep over spray from the back. Then I use yellow Eastwood Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust prevention on the back. It's oily/waxy and self heals if scratched.

I just use tape and razor blade the inserts out. Seems like a waste to buy stencils.

That's what I've always done. Doesn't take as long as it looks and results are great.

I designed a set of masks for the ralley wheels, but economically I could not compete with the big players, so I never marketed the masks. But, I can admit that mine were easy to use and worked quite well. I have the file saved so that I can have my local trophy shop run off a set for me whenever I need any.

I also admit that if you have opposable thumbs, lack a prehensile tail and possess any level of dexterity, you can mask just as well using tape.

Don't miss the important part, paint backside silver to finish the job.

I have gotten good results with a number of rattle cans in satin black. One thing I learned as a kid when painting my bicycle frames and wheels, was to warm the metal and the paint. I put the Buick wheels on horses with heat underneath and soak the spray can in warm water.
