Paint question specific to ‘68 GSs…

Looking through the ‘68 assembly manual I saw that Buick specified the hood beneath the cowl scoop be painted (as per a drawing in another manual). I presume it should be a low gloss black, but has anyone pulled a scoop off an original paint ‘68 and seen the surface below it painted?

I'll check with the former owner of the low-mileage, original paint '68 GS400 that was sold on BAT last year. He might have a good photo of this area. He was a participating member of this board for many years but can't post anymore due to some type of run-in with a former moderator that is no longer on this board. :(

This is the only photo I have and it doesn't show it clearly.

Thanks! Is that the car with the platinum interior? If so, it’s sooo nice.

It sure looks dark in the scoop…

Wow Patrick, owning 68 GS’s forever and I don’t know the answer to that question. I just assumed it was always painted the car color. If someone finds out a definitive answer that will be interesting.

Yes. It was a stunning original car.

Today I learned something new thanks to Patrick. I have a '68 GS but was not aware of this blacked-out area because the hood has been repainted.

I think my black car is original paint.
I’ll pull it and check if there- it will be interesting if black cars had this done .

Huh, both of mine are just body color, but not original paint either. Inquiring minds want to know...

It does seem odd that they would call out that area to get paint, and not specify color? Part of the scoop assembly is painted also. I wonder how that process went.

The color would have been called out on the sheet in question, however the sheet being referenced is not in the assembly manual…. hence the question here.

That sheet may not have been part of the assembly manual, but from some other factory publication used in the body shop area.

Also, in the revision block it states when that note was added to the drawing. You would need to look that date up to see if the early 68’s did not have that area painted. It might have been a mid-year change.

Many things changed during the production years. The revision blocks let you know when they occurred.

Welcome to the world of assembly manuals.

A good case for mid-production changes can be seen in the 69 cars.

If you had an early 69 with the optional body side/trunk stripes, the stripes started at the front fenders, went to the rear wheel well, went over the rear wheel, and stopped at the back of the car.

After a certain date the stripes were changed to not go over the rear wheels. This was called out in the revision blocks in the 69 assembly manual. My car has the over the rear wheel stripes, but if it was built a week or two later, it would not have had them.

The date the cars were produced often has a big impact on what is correct vs not correct on these cars.

So where the assembly manual refers to drawing #1383717, we don't have that?

Spoke with the former owner of the original paint white ‘68 GS400. It’s an early production car (September ’67) that was built at the Fremont plant and the black paint under the scoop appears to be a satin black.

Mine had been painted at least once with the scoop removed; other than a little texture at the edges and darkness at the holes it’s all body color.

My white 68 coupe looks almost like black crinkle or rhino hide iirc. One of David Roth’s restorations.

    Duane,
If you get a chance can you post a picture of the stripe on your 69 GS. I’ve never seen a stripe on a 69 GS. Neither one of them
