Thanks Tim Bamboo Cream Yellow is one of my favoite colors too and original to that 70 GS 455 I restored and still have for sale! Post all the details and pics when you get the car home Congrats on your New /Old BigBlock 70 GS. Rich
Okay here goes. This is the codes on the cowl tag. I can't remember how to break everything down except the first 5 of the vin: ST 70 44637 FL1 TR 185 55 55 There are other numbers to the right of the fl1, but I couldn't read em. The car is rough. It looks like it was pulled out of a river. At this point, I'm not sure if it is worth fixing. It would break my heart if it wasn't. Here's a couple of pics. These were taken with my phone. I'll try to get better ones in the next few days.
Tim Body tag info shows that it is a 70 GS 455 hardtop built at Flint. 185 is Pearl white bucket seat interior 55 55 is Cornet Gold top and bottom no vinyle top Cornet gold is the bright Gold color of your wrist watch Gold. Tim,save the car it's all there with a high options ,good color combo,#'s matching and factory Bigblock 70 GS I forget if you mentioned before does it have boxed rear control arms with rear sway bar F41 rally suspension? Nice car! Post some pics and Documentation when you get it from either Sloan or W Roberts.
Congrats. Sounds like a sharp color combo. I agree that a 70 GS 455 is very under rated and a tremendous buy. Post some pic's when you get a chance. Best Regards, Eric
Gs455! Nice catch, tell us about where you found the car and how, I love these stories. Most car enthusiasts dont realize that a GS455 is a very stout car. They think if its not a Stage1 it cant be very fast... I could put Stage1 emblems on my car and a breather decal and 99.99% would never know, especially if they rode in the car. Bert
Bert and Eric You guys are right on the money Any Buick GS 455 is a rare very valuable Musclecar. With only 5189 70 GS 455 Hardtop cars built in 1970 it is lower production than 1969 GTO Judge that everyone freaks out about at 6800 produced in 69. Like I have said many times "As long as it's a Big Block car life is good"
I couldn't make this story up. Keep in mind, I've been driving my wife nuts about getting another car for the past year or so. Here goes: Tuesday, I had a customer come in looking for a used vehicle for his wife(I'm a car salesman at a new car dealership). I took them up to show them a car I thought they might be interested in. The wife asked the husband what he thought, and he replied, " I don't care what you get, I want the yellow Rumble Bee dodge truck across the street." I asked him if he was a gearhead and he replied, " yup, I used to have a couple of old chevys." I said to him, "that's cool, I love Buicks." Then, he proceeds to tell me that he works with a guy that has a 70 GS 455, and he's trying to sell it. I'm thinking to myself, there's no way this is real. It's probably a skylark with a GS hood, or worse, its not even a buick. What are the odds that this car exists in the Pittsburgh area without me knowing about it. So the next day, he has the owner of the GS call me. He tells me about the car, and it sounds totally legit. We decide to meet at his brother's house, where the car is parked, the next day. As I'm pulling into the driveway, the brother comes out to tell me the guy's on his way. He opens the doors to the building and there it is. Its the real deal. There's so much crud on the vin in the dash that I can't read it. I opened the door and found the vin on the blue sticker. After looking over everything for about 2 hours, I made the guy an offer. After 10 minutes, he said he'd do it. He said he's been wanting to fix it up for the past 20 years, just never got around to it. I originally thought the car sat since 86 or so. Turns out, I was about 10 years off. He spun a bearing back in '76 or '77, probably because of the 4.30 gears. He parked the car, and it hasn't been on the road since. Its a real shame. It almost looked like they built the shed around the car. I always read about these barn finds, but quite frankly, I never thought it would happen to me. I love the car, even though its not a stage car. The only things I can't find are the distibutor, alternator, alt bracket, water pump pulley, and the original fan shroud. Rich, the car does not have the F41 suspension. I found that kinda odd since the first owner bought it to tow. He said the car didn't even have rally wheels, it had steelies with dogdish hubcaps. How would I know who to contact about documentation? Wayne Roberts or Sloan? I haven't been home in the light yet, and the car's still on the trailer outside. I'm gonna get some better pics of it tomorrow, and try and get it in the garage.
Fan shroud? You have probably already asked and looked, but just in case. Ask if it might be stashed in the shed, or see if they will let you look around to try and find it. Heck you might find some of the other parts that are missing. I cant imagine driving a street car with 4:30 gears. I had a 62SDCat with 4:88's and it was about useless for street driving. Congratulations Bert
The production date on on the cowl tag will usually tell us whether it is Sloan or Wayne that has the records.
Re: Fan shroud? Good point Bert- If it has been sitting that long ask to poke around the shed. I'd bet the stuff is in there somewhere.
Tim Post all the data stamped into firewall body tag as it appears and I will be able to tell you who will have your paperwork. By the way, great story! Looking forward to more pics and detail Rich
Educate me please!!! "Sloan or Wayne" will have the records. Do Buicks have a source for documentation? o No: Thanks, Dave
Dave Sloan has Microfish from start of 70 Flint production Aug 1969 to around early Dec 69. Wayne Roberts a Buick enthusiast like you and I bought at a swap meet years ago the rest of the Flint microfish Dec -69 to July 70. He has built a small business around it called GS Historic Society. Sloan also has microfish from other assemble plants for whole year as well.
cars in barns/garages QUOTE "I always read about these barn finds, but quite frankly, I never thought it would happen to me. " Post some pics when you get a chance. I have been pestering this 74 year old man to sell me his70GS455, it has been sitting outside ruining for many years. He wont sell it, says he is going to fix it up some day. It is only good for parts only at this point and most everything on the car is ruined or incorrect. I dont plan on pursuing it again. On the other hand I discovered a neighbor who is a very nice fellow and owns the largest collection of musclecars that I am aware of in this area. He has several dozen musclecars, Chevys, Pontiacs, Buicks I haven't seen a Olds yet but he has two other buildings full. He just bought five GTO's from one individual... There are still lots of treasures to be discovered. I hope some day to find a Wildcat or Riviera in excellent original condition for a good price. Sorry for the hijack. Please post more pics... Bert
How about the frame? Be sure and check the frame horns on both sides to see how rusty the frame is. Also the cowl, you can remove the stainless to find out how bad the termites are. At least it does not have the dreaded vinyl top kiss of death... Bert
Looks like you got a nice grill with the car that will save you some bucks...It's a nice color combo too. As long as your not in a hurry, have the resources, (time and $) it should be a fun project. Certainly worth of the effort.
