My engine runs great, but has a water leak due to broken tc bolt, which I'm fixing. Bought Melling k201.
    1. Why does new relief valve have oval holes not found on old one?
    2. If new pump gears are making contact w/ housing cover, what's the best method of 'sanding?' ? And then I'll have to ask how tight is too tight?
    3. Filter bypass valve spring - dovi pop the cap out with a screwdriver to replace it?
    Thanks for helping.

Oval holes are just a design difference. I wouldn't worry about that.

If the tops of the gears make contact with the pump cover, that is a good sign. The gears should protrude ABOVE the gasket surface if the gear pocket is in good shape. The proper gasket will give you clearance there. If you really want to dial in the proper clearances, read my thread here,

And buy a TA Performance oil pump shim kit. I would also get a booster plate.
