    Hey All,

The relief spring cover on my oil pump leaks. Is that just a crush washer between the cover and the housing? If so, what size? If not, what gasket do I use to seal it?

    Thanks,

    Aren't they all?:)

These cars eventually leak a bit somewhere. Leaks can be deceiving. It could be coming from the front of the pan or front crank seal. The cap for the pressure relief valve gasket rarely leaks. Getting a gasket for it should be easy. Remove the cap, take it down to the parts store and match a gasket to it.

I’ve always seen a nylon/plastic type O-ring like what is used for the oil pan drain plug.

No reason that wouldn't work, but I believe they were paper from the factory, like in the TA link.

I’ve been replacing gaskets and chasing down leaks for a good while. Just did the oil pan.

it looks thicker than a paper gasket. I suspected a nylon washer. But I will take it out and see what’s in there.

I have become somewhat hesitant with things like that because next thing you know, I’ll have the whole oil pump off the car, and it will be another month in the garage.

I mean, my current project, started with changing the intake gasket - next thing you know - I needed a new intake manifold. And of course, while I was at it, might as well tackle that pan gasket - oh look at that, a hole in the pan. Now I have to track down a new pan. While I’m waiting, might as well change the motor mounts….

:DMission Creep:D You can use any composition gasket as long as it is the right size.

No need to be hesitant with that gasket. I just swapped out the oil pump springs in my 400 and it took 10-minutes, tops. Only about a table spoon of oil came out when I removed the cover. I'm pretty sure that my TA adjustable regulator has a nylon gasket there, too. I reused it with no leaks and tightened to torque spec in the manual. I think it was 25-30 lb/ft.

Awesome, thanks for the note. Was it the same size as the oil pan gasket? 1/2”?

I wish that I could answer that for you. I did not measure it or compare it to the oil drain plug gasket. If I had to guess, I would say it's larger. I just swapped the springs and reused the gasket that was there.

IIRC the drain plug O-ring is smaller
