Hey guys.. I know there's a thread bout oil pressure on the 455 section, but thought I'd ask here since mine's a 350.. What is Normal or Good oil pressures supposed to be? At idle in drive I have 10-15, idle in park 15-20. Blowing down the highway it never sees 40 but hovers around 30 to 35 or so.. Oil is Castrol GTX 10w-30, Filter is Mobile1. I don't care for the filter much as the drainback system blows, starts with zero pressure until the pump starts winding up after a sec.. Me no like...

So fellas, toss me your thoughts...

10-15 per 1000rpm is perfectly normal. i see 15-20 at hot idle, and up to 60 or so on high revs.

Thanks.. I still would like more tho. I mean, new q-jet, crusing down the highway at 100 (yes, crusing. :spank: ) the gauge never hit 40. The otherday it was over 100 outside and the pressure as I was pulling into PAW was almost 10.. Surely I can do better.. Thanks!

My 350 was the same way when I pulled it at 150,000+ miles.. about 10-15 at idle and 40 or so cruising. What I would try is using some thicker oil. I use Mobil 1 15W-50 in my 455 and it hold great oil pressure. You will definitely notice a difference from the 10W-30, especially at idle.

Scott, try Castrol Synthetic Blend 20w50, not as costly as a full synthetic but I had very good results. Your current oil pressure I would classify as Normal given the condition of your engine.

I had an engine that got 0-5 at idle, maybe 20 at 3000 rpm then 10 at 4000 rpm!!!

Did a 1/4 mile pass with that engine, at the end of the race you could hear every lifter clicking away... Turned out to be due to a clogged pickup screen. The same timing cover and oil pump that was on that engine is on my current engine which gets 10ish at idle when HOT and ~ 35 when cruising... Thats on generic 20w50 and a (ugh) Fram filter (I didn't put it there, was on when I got the car back!!! 100% AC Delco until this one was put on)
