I have a pontiac :spank:400 bored 30 over/400turbo trans.oil pressure is around 60lbs when starting as the car warms up oil pressure drops. at 190deg.oil pressure drops to 15-18lbs.the bottom end has 20,000 miles on it,I just put cam (415dur) new valve springs 650 eld. carb,intake,gages,373 posi rearend.I had 10w30 pensoil/fram filter in it, thinking oil/filter problems, changed oil to 10w40 casteroil/w wix filter. no change car can be just sitting in the driveway and still does it ! I have about 500 miles on it since built. you can hear valves getting louder when this happens, any ideas on whats going on thanks in advance.ray:
He already did. Before throwing that old Fram filter away, it would be nice to open it up with some tin snips to see what debris might be inside. For this to happen with only a cam change, something wierd is happening and it doesn't sound good. Devon
cut filter open no metal in it oil pressure does come up when the motor races up, at 2500rpm the oil pressure runs about 50lbs as long as u are driving but when u stop it idles at 700rpm ,temp 190,oil pressure 15-18 lbs. then goes back up when u take off. rockers little noisy, are their any body else having this problem, noisy rockers(ticking not bad just annoying),low oil pressure ? what should oil pressure run idle, running ? I might be worring for no reasonray:
That pressure reading sounds fine...you need next to nothing at idle. Pontiacs I'll guess would like to see an increase in pressure of 11-12 psi for every 1000 rpm. Devon
i have 3 455 one idles at 12 lbs hot one idles at 14 hot and one idles at 2o hot no problems on the dyno in the cars or when i do a tear down and ck at these pressures no black bearings or sighns of starving they look like new .. Buick wants 44 lbs at 2400 rpm hot 180 degrees with 10w 40 they dont give a idle pressure ,, on the one car i have with a light the light comes on at 4 psi
15-18 psi at 700 RPM is fine. Nothing to wory about there. Mine idles hot at about 14 psi with an in gear idle of 750 RPM.
thanks for the input:beers2: i'll just drive it and keep an eye on the oil for any sighns of metal shavings ray:
