I installed an HEI distributor the other day and had the motor at 10-12 degrees before TDC. As i went to drop the distributor in, the rotor would only come to rest either 1 notch before or after the #1 wire/plug. Is this correct due to the degree set? Any help would be great!
Hey Chaunce, How are you doing? Did the distributor go in all the way? That’s a big question. A lot of times the bottom of the distributor gear hits the oil pump shaft, and does not lineup properly, which does not allow the distributor to go all the way in. If that is the case you need to look at the bottom of the distributor and you will see how it lines up with the oil pump shaft. You might have to take a long screwdriver and turn the shaft so that it lines up with the distributor. It often takes me quite a few times before I get the distributor in all the way.
Thanks for the info! Yes, i did that, but finally figured it out by just repositioning the hei to the #1 plug position before tightening it down Go figure huh!?!@ Sheesh!
Now I have an issue a bit not starting everything is wired appropriately except for the fact that it's a new battery and I'm not getting 12 volts atall! The other issue is I only have one IGN1 terminal not two and I see some people were stating to wire the ignition one with the starter R terminal. Is that correct? I should probably take a little breather from it but it bugs me until I get this stuff done I appreciate all your help thank you so much
You need to replace the resistor wire with a regular wire. You only need one 12v source for the HEI. See: https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?t...ystem-function-tests-and-modification.248990/
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have one ran straight to the batt on the HEI. Mission switch I looked at the back of the ignition switch and did notice that there is an ignition2 but there's no prong for it so would I still crossed the wire over and solder it maybe or just use the one ignition terminal? Any help would be great
You guys are awesome and appreciate to no extent the help! I got to the point where all is hooked up properly, but left to go south for vacation, so didnt have the chance to fully finish. I cranked it once and fired, yet ran very rough, which i contributed to the vacuum advance needing adjusted. When i returned, i started the process and before i go too far, wanted to see if i should. I put a little fuel down her throat and cranked with it firing. It still ran rough, but also spit some fuel back out, so i shut it off and came here just in case it was something more severe........ Can anyone give me an idea if this is normal? Thanks! I will be donating for your time to both here and teambuick:_)
Hey Chaunce, It sounds like your ignition might be a little retarded and trying to backfire. Try advancing it some. Just my two cents.
