Hi, Have you ever scattered any engines all over the track learning how to run nitrous? I have never messed with it, but I hear it can do bad things if not set up right.
Nope, not yet. It can happen. If you setup the system up with the right safety switches, window switched, and timing retards, it works very well without much trouble. In the last 8 years I have only hurt one set of pistons and it was because of a new WOT switch that was a normally closed switch instead of normally open. It wouldn't have hurt anything but I ran Total Seal Gapless top rings against my better judgement. I should have used what I wanted instead of what they wanted.
A blower or turbo can also cause similar problems. So can NA if you are too lean. It's not nitrous that kills engines, it is running lean that kills engines. Be careful no matter what you do! -BC p.s. I cracked a cylinder wall once... (I wasn't careful!)
Rick, Let us know if you are going to test it at the Fayettville track. Might have to bring the dinosaur and let you beat us up. I hope we can make it.
Kevin want's to know if ya found the spot on the jet map that takes aluminum off of spark plugs and re-attaches it to pistons
That's toooo FUNNY!!! Just got to reverse the Polarity, right?:idea2: The kit can be jetted to about 800HP as long as you have enough bottle and fuel to feed it. Just don't for get to bring your NUTS.... BTW..There will be two 10lbers in the car for it.:Brow: The car should be at the track in the next couple of weeks when the temps drop a little. Doubt it will be Fayetteville but you never know. They may decide to prep the whole track...Looking for a Saturday night Test and tune or bracket race to run behind.
Shoot, where ever you end up going, let Jimmy know and hopfully I can tag along, too. I don't get to the track near as much as I used to.
Jimmy, I'm going to be racing at Thunder Valley tonight in Red Springs. Gates open at 5:30 pm. It is bracket racing night but I will be doing test-n-tune from 6-8 and behind the bracket cars as necessary. The track is off of Old Lowery Rd. You would take 71 to Red Springs and turn off left onto Old Lowery(only goes left). Track is on the left 1/2 mile past first stop sign. 910-309-6981.
First pass for new rebuild and new nitrous system Well, both nitrous solenoids in the kit were "messed up". I eneded up running home to get the coils from my old NOS Cheater solenoids to replace the fuel coils that were on my new NS nitrous solenoids. It was fun figuring out that problem:idea2: and was eating up time especially with running back home. Once I got it fixed, I managed a 5.58 @ 128mph with a 100 less HP of jetting and setup "rich" since it was a new system. 60ft was 1.32 since I fixed the "retard" curve I left in the MSD from 4 years ago. Was 1.36 on my 5.50 pass of the last setup. Next pass, I took out some fuel, went up 50HP and it spun bad, even in high gear it smoked the tires half track. It should have went 5.30's. Last pass I managed to leave the nitrous switch off....opps....and ran out of time. There is a little coolant leak that I managed to develope in #2 intake port, but "should" be an easy fix. Hey Bobb, I found that thin spot that you warned me about.... In all, the motor felt GREAT as well as the car. The motor revved very smooth and the car drove itself down the track, shifting at 7600 which still felt a little early (hit the nitrous shut off at 7500 and slightly bumped the 7600 rev limit). It actually felt like a 6.0-5.9 pass so I was very surprised and pleased when I got the time slip. The Nitrous had 36n/32f jetting at 7 1/4 psi fuel/ 950 psi nitrous running 2 10lb bottles, taking 12 degrees out from 37 total (I actually have 42 total degrees so it will idle and start good with 116 octane fuel running 11.5 compression but pull it out in the run curve at 2900 and up). Since the motor felt so good, clean, under-worked, and the plugs checked good, I stepped up to a 40n/36f, dropped the fuel to 6 3/4 pounds, and pulled ot 2 more degrees of timing. The motor was down-right wicked feeling but the track wouldn't hold it. Last pass, adjust the travel limiters and dropped the tire pressure 1/2 pound, but left the nitrous off for the first-half of the track. Kicking the nitrous on past the 330 mark, it still ran 122mph. Will need to fine tune the 1250 carb since it doesn't like the 2800 stall converter that is in it and is a pain at the starting line. On a trans brake, it won't stall past 2800. WIth the track closing and a slight water leak to attent to, the next pass with have to wait until another weekend. I'm ready though!!!!:Brow: Still have to go up another 60HP of nitrous to get back where I was with the plate...... One more thing, the Hot Lap 101 tire treatment seemed to work very well on my 1 1/2 old tires. My buddy Robert who was running with me, used it on his 1 1/2 year old slicks and thought the same after his 5.22 pass....For under $50 it was cheeper than a new set of slicks...
Rick: Great work, I admire your guts. How much does your car weight with you in it? When are you planning on getting it on a 1/4 mile track? It's going to be a ride. Good luck, hope you can keep it together until you get it dialed. JIm N.
Great job Rick! Who said those factory blocks are so bad??? Hah! you got more guts than most puttin that much spray on a stock block. Great running car! I think I smell a match race. Poor man's blower vs Procharger. Gold vs. black. Crawford vs. Makley. Could be big!!
