Dude put some compression in that thing, the best E85 man in the country is in MI, Eric at Horsepower innovations, my dad's car is 13.6 to 1 on corn ,... something to think about, you would pickup 60hp

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

Thanks Ethan. Eric will appreciate the referral. Call Eric at 616 929 5800 Lots of corn here in MI. Both Eric and I have it growing all around us. We are changing my Buick's 950HP over this winter.
BTW, Mart do you work for Holley? Visner, where I also, besides for Eric, work part time. We do the ProStock throttle bodies for Holley EFI.

No Jerry, retired now for 3 years. This e85 does look interesting .....I looked at Visner website, I am jealous! That's the kind of job that you would like going to!
I have a friend that works at Livernois Motorsports doing head porting. All good stuff right there!:)

Sorry Steve, I have to give this one to Mart. Ported heads and roller cam, ran really well when it was running.

I would have to guess by my butt dyno that if Mart can get traction off of the line and get a good 60 ft time he would probably hit the High to mid 12s. And that was when he had the 3.64 gear in it, I haven't rode in it since he swapped to the 4.11 gears, he has a 200R4 that helps gear multiplication as well.

Been trying to get him to go to the track for a couple of years now but he's always to busy up north in the warm weather on his boat fishing. Wanted him to get a reference before the stroker goes in it, should run even better after that. But first we have to do the autopsy on this one and figure out what the flock went wrong?!!

I'll give you a call when we take a ride out to Dave's shop if you have time to stop by, or if you can't make it and if its not to late maybe we'll stop by your place?

Seat of the pants is not the same as tripping the lights at the end of the 1/4.

Very true, the first few trip to the track are usually a disappointment from the perception of speed on the street, to actual track times.

True, using the butt dyno IS guessing and that's what I did, I guessed. It felt like it pulled harder than my Impala though and that thing does 13.2s all day long at the track but right, we don't really know until or if ever he takes it to the track and gets some real numbers. But his roller cam and ported heads did seem to work together very well, even with the dual plane intake that was probably holding it back.

We're shooting for mid 11s(if he ever takes it?) with the brand new used engine, Mart doesn't want to get kicked off the track because he doesn't have a roll bar or cage because he's to fast(his car is to nice to do that to). I could go on and on but its Mart's car so any other details I'll let Mart post if he wants to.

Derek, did you drive Mart's car, or were you a passenger? My experience has been that a car always feels faster on the street than it actually is at the track, but it feels yet faster from the passenger seat, probably because you have nothing to hold onto.:D.

No I haven't driven Mart's car, but been in my car with someone else driving as well as me driving it at the track so I have an idea what my car felt like in the passenger's seat from my CRS(Can't remember sh!7) memory.

Like I said, it was a guess. But ported heads, slightly over 10:1 static compression, huge roller cam, good gearing with a JW converter and headers it ran very well when it was running, sounded like a big block with that cam too!

Hey, you guys BENCH RACING this winter already!:D Winter starts on the 21st.:D

Mark, what if the alum heads aren't out for another year? You going to wait it out?
My car sat for 4 yrs after my mom & dad passed, gas goes bad, car & parts take up space, etc.
    Think about it.....

My car is a street car. Never going to cage it, fiberglass body parts, etc. Interior is too nice to destroy. Last time I went to track, got one run in, 13.50's @101, bad 2.1 60 ft., all the guys came up and said my car was too nice to be a track car. Trying to somewhat bullet proof it to keep my butt in the seat & not underneath it. :D I love cruising the streets and some spirited driving. I should take this eng when done and throw it in an Apollo.:) That might happen if I can find a nice 6 cyl old ladies car!:p I'm an old Chevy II/ Nova guy. Had a 65, 68,69, & a 70, all SS's.

I would say he ran a low 13 since I ran a 13.31 and ran a string of 13.40's the same day. My suspension is so tight it will not move up and down. You couldn't even bounce it without the shocks! My system is made to handle corners so I gave up on weight transfer. On the nitrous the whole car lifts up in the air.

    saturday044 buick.jpg Skylark pic.jpg

That was the 125 shot of nitrous at Quaker in 2005. I was running about 12.08 there @110. When I went to Dragway 42 I went 11.87 there @112. That was with that nice loose 3500 stall convertor that I could foot brake to 3000 rpm. I liked that convertor. So when I talked to Mart on the phone we talked about him using a 3600 convertor on his. The launch is Crazy when it gets above 3500.
See how those front tires tuck in on that launch, How much faster would I be if it wasn't for that suspension. On my posted video in my sig is a 12.42 at the 1/4. Not as much lift there and that was at the same track. I was using about a 75 shot there for that run.

He will have to run at 11.50 to put in a roll cage so he would have to be going past 90 in the 1/8 to get there. Gonna need about 500 rwhp to do it. At least a good 450 rwhp. I had just about 420 rwhp on the bigger shot. Gonna need abut as much hp as Larry to make it happen.

I'm loving the conversation, please keep it up.
Yesterday, I ordered an SP3, and a box full of other goodies from TA.
I just got off the phone with Eric at Horsepower Innovations. I'm going with E85, and will buy a carb from him when I'm ready. Thanks for posting the phone # Jerry.
This weekend instead of going to PRI, my BFF that used to work at VED is coming to my shop to port my iron heads.

The ball is rolling now! Mike, share a few details from that port job. Buddy that works at Livernois, ports in his garage at home too. I took him my heads to look at them & my porting, liked them but said with the sbb iron runners, he would want to weld up & fill areas to really make them flow real well.....Big $$ to do that on irons.

I'll take some pictures, and maybe start a thread. We aren't going to go too wild on these. No welding or epoxy work, unless he feels it's important. I'm going to let him do all the work.
I will have to buy some pizza.

My block had similar wear behind the cam though not as bad as Marts. I've seen this on other 350 blocks also.
I believe this is due to added valve spring pressure required by bigger cams. This forces the cam rearward and the thrust face on the cam is just too small of diameter to handle the force. Also being iron on iron does not help. With weak factory springs and low RPM of a stock engine it was adequate, barely.
On my block I got the edge really hot with the torch then after cooling polished it. Short term fix.
The ideal fix would be to machine a pocket in the block, and turn a flat onto the cam nose where there is now an angled surface. Place a torrington bearing behind and in front of the cam and machine a cap that would fit over it all trapping the bearings and cam flange. Bolt this to the front of the block. This would function as a cam button as well. That is like a Gen 3 Hemi only it does not use torringtons. The Gen 3 hemi cam retainer (hardened steel) could be used as a block saver. The center hole is the perfect size. Just cut down the outside to a smaller shape, grind some bolt holes into it, mill a 1/8" deep receiver in the block face and bolt it on. Roller cam guys would still need a button.

Oh, and I'm way faster than Mart!
