The 1968 Buick Chassis Manual will list the stock alternator part number. Unfortunately, the link to that part of the chassis manual is broken over at Teambuick.com.
If yours is original, have it rebuilt (or at least set it aside and keep it). Any parts store reman by application will fit and work. Either should be able to test it first. Be aware that on your car, ‘alternator’ problems can be voltage regulator problems. I hate to say it, but if you need a regulator, the chinese solid state units work better than the more mechanical ones (and the cover can be swapped from your old one). Patrick
My understanding.... the original cases where the bolts hold the two halves together are more of round bosses rather than a more flowing radius from the boss to the case. Mine also does not have the tapped hole boss on the back case. I have a parts store working alternator available if you are not concerned about Numbers. Troy
The above chart that Larry posted from Team Buick does not go into what type of car the alternators go to. Big cars historically use 42 amp for non-AC and 63 amp for AC A-bodies use 37 amp for non-AC and 55 amp for AC. Almost all the books/charts out there do not reference this, which leads to a bunch of confusion and guys buying the wrong parts for their cars. Duane
If your car was ordered with the HD cooling package, then a bunch of things were up-graded as well. I don't remember what items this happened to, and believe the parts affected may have changed depending on the production year, but this may be why you had a 55 amp alt. Duane
I have the forced air comfort flow vent blowers is that the HD cooling package? https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?t...ation-system-very-rare-option-code-i2.324980/
The HD cooling involved a bigger then standard radiator and other parts. It involved a beefier cooling for the drivetrain not the passengers. Duane
